  • The Personal Is Professional

Open Access•Hanna Baumann, Dareen Sayyad et al.•ARTICLE•Area•2026•Referencias: 26

This paper examines the personal‐professional nexus in community‐based research to propose expanded ethical responsibilities for research involving Citizen Science. The article emerges from shared reflections by a UK and Palestine‐based team on research conducted by the Palestinian Citizen Social Scientists within their own communities in Ramallah between 2023 and 2024 – a period marked by devastating war and genocide. We foreground the negotiati…

  • Debt here, there and everywhere

    Open Access•Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•Dialogues in Human Geography•2022•Referencias: 3

Let me sincerely thank all of the contributors to this forum and also the editors for facilitating the opportunity to have this conversation during a period when it was extremely difficult to meet in person. It is a real privilege to have one's work read so carefully and generously. Each contributor not only picks out key insights from my book, but also offers a provocation that take the ideas and themes developed in Spacing Debt elsewhere. This …

  • The promise of financial inclusion

    Open Access•Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 20

Existing conceptualisations of financial inclusion must account for the promise of a better future that is an integral part of such processes. This argument is drawn from an analysis of elite-led financial inclusion processes in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Financial inclusion names processes through which poorer people become enfolded in financial technologies, practices and markets. Such processes circulate globally, taking on differen…

  • Informal Sector

    Open Access•Christopher Harker•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2017

The informal sector designates forms of paid labor that are outside, or are placed beyond, legislative and regulatory frameworks, which designate the formal sector. The crude binary between formal and informal has subsequently been nuanced, leading to the concept of dynamic and heterogeneous informal economies, and more broadly informality, a heuristic for identifying performative divisions of illegitimacy/legitimacy that constitute inter alia pr…

  • Debt space

    Open Access•Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2017•Citada por: 49•Referencias: 55

Debt is widely conceived as temporal - present consumption bought with future labour. This paper advances conceptualisations of debt by incorporating the active role space plays in creating, maintaining and undermining debt relations. Debts are topological binds - a particular kind of spatial connection, which are entangled with topographic spaces to produce debt ecologies. This argument is developed by tracing the creation, maintenance and/or de…

  • The ambiguities of cohabitation

    Open Access•Christopher Harker, Chris Harker•ARTICLE•Area•2014•Referencias: 3

In this paper I examine J udith B utler's ethic of cohabitation as a means of thinking intimacy‐geopolitics. B utler's ethic of cohabitation begins with an inability to choose in advance who we inhabit the earth with. Conceptually this idea is linked with the precariousness of life: a subject's life is always in the hands of others, both known and unknown. As such, cohabitation is always an intimate affair that is at the same time global. However…

  • The Only Way Is Up? Ordinary Topologies ofRamallah

    Open Access•Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2014•Citada por: 38•Referencias: 37

This article seeks to conceptualize and value some of the quotidian geographies responsible for contemporary forms of urban change. The starting point for the argument is an attempt to account for recent urban change in the Palestinian city of Ramallah, particularly the proliferation of apartment buildings, using emerging work on verticality. It is argued that work on verticality focuses empirically on prominent cities and spaces of violent confl…

  • Precariousness, Precarity, and Family

    Open Access•Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2012•Citada por: 50•Referencias: 35

Geographical studies which have engaged the family have generally done so by critiquing the patriarchal, heternormative, family. However, this paper argues that families are enmeshed in a plurality of political and ethical spacings that exceed this singular focus-a claim advanced by reviewing recent studies of Palestinian families. These studies reveal ways in which Palestinian families have been constituted by colonialism and nationalism, and ar…

  • On (Not) Forgetting Families

    Open Access•Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2010•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 38

This paper is a response to Valentine's recent suggestion that the family is an absent presence within geography. Persuaded by her argument, I explore other disciplinary approaches to theorizing families, and, in particular, how discursive appropriations of 'the family' and theories of family practices can enlarge our understandings of what families are and how they are done. I then argue that geographers can contribute to such studies by explori…

  • Student Im/mobility in Birzeit, Palestine

    Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2009•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 13

This paper draws on research with students at the Birzeit University in Palestine to examine how their experiences of university are shaped by a range of im/mobilities. In particular I am interested in how students who rent accommodation in Birzeit and make frequent trips to the cities and villages where they grew up experience a range of im/mobilities that are heavily impacted by technologies and practices of the Israeli Occupation Forces that a…

  • Spacing Palestine through the home

    Open Access•Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•2009•Citada por: 62•Referencias: 14

This paper explores connections that can be made between houses, homes and violence in Palestine, and representational consequences of making such connections. Drawing on ethnographic field research in Birzeit, I put recent work on critical geographies of home into conversation with geographies and geopolitics of Palestine. I criticise the tendency to represent Palestinian geographies almost entirely through the lens of the Israeli Occupation. Wh…

  • Playing and affective time-spaces

    Christopher Harker•ARTICLE•Children s Geographies•2005•Citada por: 42•Referencias: 17

In this paper I have two objectives. The first is to critically explore definitions of playing that have underpinned a great deal of research in children's geography. In so doing I want to highlight some of the assumptions that various authors within geography have made (often implicitly) about the ontological status of playing. This will in turn, lead me to work with, between and sometimes against three authors who have tried to theorize playing…
