  • Recognition of Sentences from Text after Massed Vs Spaced Readings

William Scott Terry•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1983•References: 1

College students read two 600-word passages, and then were tested for recognition of verbatim sentences from the passages, as well as paraphrased and distractor sentences. In different groups, a target passage was read once, or twice with the readings being immediately successive (massed), or separated by an intervening reading (spaced). The Ss showed more recognition of verbatim than paraphrased and distractor sentences. Massed repetition increa…

  • Pre-Exposure Effects on the Preference for Novel Stimuli

William Scott Terry•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1981

Rats (N = 45 at start, but four were dropped during the study) were tested in a modified T-maze having one goal area marked by a distinctive set of novel stimuli (patterned wall- and floor-inserts). Extramaze exposures to this novel-stimulus complex occurred prior to some trials, but not others, in within-Ss designs across three experiments. Pre-exposures of 40 to 60 sec duration decreased subsequent choice of the novel-stimulus goal in the maze.…

  • Effects of Food-Reinforcer Primes During Acquisition of an Instrumental Running Response in Rats

William Scott Terry•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1980

Two instrumental runway studies with rats as Ss investigated the effects of pretrial feedings on the acquisition and performance of the running response. Experiment 1, using a within-Ss design (N = 9), found no difference in running times during acquisition in prefed and nonprefed alleys. During extinction there was a facilitation of running within each alley on prefed versus nonprefed trials, but again no between-alley differences. Experiment 2,…
