  • Alexandria 1860–1960: The cosmopolitan identity

    Robert Mabro•CHAPTER•Alexandria, Real and Imagined•2017

A large proportion of the foreign immigrants to Alexandria spent the rest of their lives in the city as did their descendants. A cosmopolitan Alexandria emerged around 1850 and virtually disappeared in the 1960s. There were attempts to relate the cosmopolitan Alexandria of the 1920s and 1930s to the glorious Greco-Roman past of the city. The ambiguity of the Alexandrian identity resides perhaps in this feeling that otherness was its true nature b…

  • The Impact of the Gulf Crisis on World Oil and Opec

    Robert Mabro•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•1994•Cited by: 2

The Gulf crisis which broke out in August 1 990 with the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq was to a large extent a conflict about oil. The military intervention led by the United States and a group of allies, acting with a United Nations mandate to liberate Kuwait, was also largely motivated by concerns about the possibility of long-term control of oil supplies by an unfriendly and aggressive power Iraq. Equally, the issues which gave Iraq a pretext for…

  • Natural Gas: Governments and Oil Companies in the Third World

John Blunden, Ann Davison et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1989•Cited by: 1

It is asserted that oil companies claim to be generally receptive to gas development proposals; however, the lack of potential markets for gas, problems of foreign exchange convertibility, and lack of a legal framework often hinders their engagement. Governments, on the other hand, need to secure domestic energy supply and, if possible, gain some export earnings or royalties. An extensive discussion on the principles of pricing and fiscal regimes…

  • Opec and the World Oil Market: The Genesis of the 1986 Price Crisis

    D J Spooner, Derek Spooner et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1988•Cited by: 1

The history of OPEC's attempts to regulate prices in the world petroleum market has involved notable successes and several crises. An analysis of the nature of these crises and of the causes and circumstances of their occurrence is however crucial to the understanding of oil price movements and of the complex relationships between the actions and policies of OPEC and the behaviour of the oil market. This book sheds important light on these issues…
