Prophecy, Gastronomic Ghosts, and Oracular Flatulence
In this contribution, I contend that the divine “spirit, wind” was conceived as moist, wet, and vaporous in nature in ancient Israel and Mesopotamia. I adduce support for this view from biological reality and from a number of biblical and cuneiform texts that associate the spirit with water or depict it behaving like a liquid. I submit further that since the ancients believed that a divine spirit animated living bodies, they conceived it as capab…
Signs of Dream Divination in the Exagoge of Ezekiel the Tragedian, 68–89
The dream sequence found in the Exagoge of Ezekiel (68-89) has long captured the attention of scholars who have seen it as either typical of Greek tragedy, representative of an early merkavah tradition, engaging in haggadic midrash, an investiture story, or a polemic against Enochic traditions. Classicists also have pointed to numerous parallels from Greek and Jewish literary traditions that might have informed the play. However, what has hithert…

This article presents evidence for a previously unrecognized literary device in the Book of Proverbs, in which texts that cluster references to animals also contain additional paronomastic allusions to animals. This device accords with the proverbs' instruction to search for hidden knowledge, and resonates with their emphasis on the study of wild animals as a source of divine wisdom. The device also appears in psalms and prophecies, where it gene…

To Your Tents, O Israel! The Terminology, Function, Form, and Symbolism of Tents in the Hebrew Bible and the Ancient near East
Your Tents, O examines the function, form, and symbolism of ancient tents, specifically in the Hebrew Bible, but also in the greater context of the Ancient Near East. Terminology associated with tents and the blending of terms for domiciles are initially explored. Then, using historical, mythological, archaeological, and anthropological insights, tents are examined in their manifold usage: domiciliary, military, nuptial, and religious. Various pa…

The Names of God
In The Names of God, as in his previous study, Toward a Grammar of Biblical Poetics (OUP, 1992), Herbert Brichto continues to argue against the atomistic readings of the Hebrew Bible by the currently dominant schools of Biblical scholarship. He maintains, that despite the repetitions and self contradictions found in the Five Books of Moses, the Pentateuch possesses an aesthetic and ideological wholeness. Its harmonious blend of stories and struct…
