    Open Access•L S B Leakey•BOOK•Olduvai Gorge•1965

Olduvai is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world; indeed, the only Middle Pleistocene site of comparable importance is Choukoutien and Olduvai can show deposits far older. The site has produced a mass of material of the highest archaeological and palaeontology importance and in this first of five volumes Dr Leakey and his collaborators make their preliminary reports. The story of the excavations initiated by Dr Leakey in 1951 i…

  • The Potassium-Argon Dating of Late Cenozoic Rocks in East Africa and Italy [and Comments and Reply]

    Jack F Evernden, Garniss H Curtis et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1965•Cited by: 44

A technique for the potassium-argon dating of high potassium feldspars of less than 50,000 years age is described. The technique is applied to the obtaining of high precision ages in the time-range 60,000-2,000,000 years. Sufficient data are presented to show that the time-scale of Plio-Pleistocene glaciations is greater than 10 years and that the time-scale of hominoids capable of fashioning tools by the working of stone is at least 1.75 10 year…

  • The Olduvai Discoveries

    Open Access•L S B Leakey•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1962

Dr Napier and Dr Weiner quote from my preliminary reports and add, ‘All these opinions must be regarded as quite provisional for only detailed anatomical and statistical investigation will permit the assessment of the precise position of these new East African hominids within the evolutionary sequence’. Having said this, they then proceed to devote several pages to trying to assess the position of these new discoveries, when neither of them has m…
