Sharon A Carsten, Sharon Carsten et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues in…•2022

The political satire of Teresa Kok’s Lunar New Year YouTube videos demonstrates creative resistance in their polylingual humorous critique of Malaysian politics. While drawing on traditions of Chinese political satire, the satirical skits employ the unique polylingual voices of Chinese Malaysians in critical performances that seek to evade censors and entertain a diverse audience. In addition to more direct political satire, the mixed languages i…

Sharon A Carsten, Lay Hoon Ang•ARTICLE•Asian journal of social science•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 2

While code-switching patterns sometimes mark different speaker positions, they also express broader language identities and ideologies that transcend individual conversations. This is especially clear whe…

  • Comet in Our Sky: Lim Chin Siong in History

    Sharon A Carsten, Sharon A Carstens et al.•ARTICLE•Pacific Affairs•2002

Lim was a founder-member of the People's Action Party (PAP), a fact rarely, if ever, acknowledged in the city-state, and was a rising political star in the 1950s and 1960s. • From Myth to History: Yap Ah Loy and the Heroic Past of Chinese Malaysians

    Open Access•Sharon A Carsten, Sharon A Carstens•ARTICLE•Journal of Southeast Asian Studies•1988•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The exploration of differing historical interpretations has become an area of growing interest to anthropologists and historians alike, who have come to recognize that diverse interpretations of the same events can create as powerful a force for future actions as the events themselves. Following this approach, history becomes not so much a narrative progression of events, as shifts in meaning structures over time. The impact of such a perspective…
