  • Strategies for navigating primary scientific literature in undergraduate immunology courses

    Open Access•Rachel J Bergerson, Holly A Basta et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2025

The impact of immunology on our daily lives is growing every year. From vaccines to immunotherapies, it's essential for our healthcare professionals (present and future) and the general public as patients or caregivers to be literate in immunology. One way to foster immune literacy in this rapidly advancing field is through Primary Scientific Literature (PSL). There are unique challenges with integrating PSL into immunology courses. First, the la…

  • The professional identity of STEM faculty as instructors of course-based research experiences

Open Access•David I Hanauer, David Hanauer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2024

The professional identity of scientists has historically been cultivated to value research over teaching, which can undermine initiatives that aim to reform science education. Course-Based Research Experiences (CRE) and the inclusive Research and Education Communities (iREC) are two successful and impactful reform efforts that integrate research and teaching. The aim of this study is to explicate the professional identity of instructors who imple…

  • Models of classroom assessment for course-based research experiences

Open Access•David I Hanauer, Tong Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2023

Course-based research pedagogy involves positioning students as contributors to authentic research projects as part of an engaging educational experience that promotes their learning and persistence in science. To develop a model for assessing and grading students engaged in this type of learning experience, the assessment aims and practices of a community of experienced course-based research instructors were collected and analyzed. This approach…

  • From triple quandary to talent quest

    C Malik Boykin, Sean T Coleman et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2023

    A. Wade Boykin's scholarship has provided key insights into the psychological realities of racially minoritized people and catalyzed revolutionary changes in psychology and education. Combining insights from personal and research experiences, Boykin authored the foundational triple quandary (TQ), a framework describing how Black Americans must navigate the often conflicting values and priorities of dominant mainstream society, the heritage cultur…

  • Teacher Implemented Communal Learning in Math

    Open Access•Sean T Coleman, Eric A Hurley et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 52

The current study examined lasting learning effects of communal contexts for 124 African American third and fourth-grade students using a mathematics fractions unit with students’ regularly assigned teachers. Teachers in two experimental conditions received training on implementing communally or individually structured fractions curricula, and a naturalistic control was included whose participants did not receive the intervention. Findings reveal…

  • Communal and Individual Learning Contexts as They Relate to Mathematics Achievement Under Simulated Classroom Conditions

Open Access•Sean T Coleman, Adrian Wayne Bruce et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 22

The current study builds on previous communalism research by exploring the enduring facilitative effects of communal learning contexts on academic achievement for African American children over extended time and while calling on critical thinking skills. In addition, this study sought to explore the communalism construct in a more applied academic environment that approximated real classroom conditions. This study examined performance differences…

  • Investigating the Association Between Home-School Dissonance and Disruptive Classroom Behaviors for Urban Middle School Students

    Open Access•Kenneth M Tyler, Jennifer L Burris et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Disruptive classroom behaviors are a major schooling dilemma in urban schools. While several contextual and motivational factors have been statistically associated with disruptive classroom behaviors, one overlooked factor has been home-school dissonance. The current study examined the relationship between 260 middle school students’ reports of perceived home-school dissonance, several motivational antecedents of academic performance, and disrupt…

  • Examining cultural socialization within African American and European American households

    Kenneth M Tyler, Monica L Dillihunt et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This preliminary study explored the cultural socialization processes of 227 African American and European American parents of elementary schoolchildren. The Cultural Value Socialization Scales (K. M. Tyler, A. W. Boykin, C. M. Boelter, & M. L. Dillihunt, 2005) were used to garner parents' reports of their cultural value socialization activities at home. The scales contained written vignettes depicting persons involved in activity that reflected a…
