Applied Phonology, Phonetics, and Pronunciation
This entry provides an overview of the applied phonetics and phonology section of the Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics . Applied Phonetics, Phonology, and Pronunciation (APPP) is a vibrant field of research and practice devoted to the learning and teaching of second language pronunciation. Since the publication of the first edition of the Encyclopedia in 2013, APP has emerged as a prominent stream within applied linguistics thanks to its own h…
Pronunciation for Less Commonly Taught Languages
Evidence has mounted for the effectiveness of second language pronunciation instruction. Given the critical role instructors play in implementing effective instruction, one line of inquiry has been to better understand instructors’ beliefs and practices as they relate to second language pronunciation teaching and learning. A critical gap, however, is that such research has focused primarily on English, with only limited focus on languages other t…
The L2 Spanish Listener Ratings Dataset (L2SLRD)
This data report introduces the L2 Spanish Listener Ratings Dataset (L2SLRD, https://osf.io/67nm4/) and comprises two main types of data: (a) second language (L2) oral data from English first language (L1) learners of L2 Spanish at varying proficiency from two institutions in the US ( n = 42), and (b) listener ratings of that data from L1 Spanish speakers ( n = 201). The data were initially collected to examine intelligibility, comprehensibility,…

Corpus Research in L2 Phonetics and Phonology
This entry provides an introduction to corpus research in second language (L2) phonetics and phonology. Corpus research is an umbrella term for approaches to the study of language using corpora (the plural of corpus) and corpus‐based analytical methods. A corpus is a collection of texts (spoken or written) that are machine‐readable in some way. As such, corpus‐based analytical methods involve using computers to search and analyze annotated collec…
The relationships among L2 fluency, intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness
Fluency, intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness are important dimensions of second language (L2) pronunciation proficiency representing global, listener-based intuitions. This study meta-analyzed 49 reports from 1995 to 2023, examining 141 effect sizes (Pearson r ) to understand their relationships and possible moderators. Three-level meta-analysis models showed weighted mean correlations of .82, .75, .62, .57, and .32 for fluency/c…
Is Second Language Attrition Inevitable After Instruction Ends? An Exploratory Longitudinal Study of Advanced Instructed Second Language Users
Most second language acquisition (SLA) research has documented the processes involved in learning second/foreign languages, with few studies focusing on the durability of attained second language (L2) skills once instructed learners/users are no longer receiving formal instruction. The current study examines the effects of continued exposure and peak instructional attainment on the long-term evolution of advanced, instructed L2 learners' skills f…
Clarifying the role of inhibitory control in L2 phonological processing
Darcy et al. (2016) examined the relationship between language abilities and general cognition, or specifically, how inhibitory control might relate to L2 speech perception and production. Given that their findings unexpectedly indicated a stronger relationship between inhibitory control and perception in comparison to inhibitory control and production, and because inhibitory control was measured using a single, retrieval-induced inhibition task,…
Open science
Open science (OS; also known as “open research” and “open scholarship”) refers to various practices to make scientific knowledge openly available, accessible, and reusable. The core purpose of such practices is to open the process of scientific knowledge creation, evaluation, and communication to societal actors within and beyond the traditional scientific community (UNESCO, 2021). Looking across the different areas within TESOL and applied lingu…
Effects of speaking task and proficiency on the midclause pausing characteristics of L1 and L2 speech from the same speakers
This study explored the effect of speaking task on midclause pausing characteristics in the L1 and L2 speech of the same speakers to gain further insights into the potential relationship between pause location and stages of speech production. Participants included English L1 learners of L2 French ( n = 29) or Spanish ( n = 27) from the publicly available, longitudinal LANGSNAP corpus. Participants completed two oral tasks in their L1 and L2: a pi…
Revisiting the moderating effect of speaker proficiency on the relationships among intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness in L2 Spanish
This report examines the potential impacts of task and proficiency on listener judgments of intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness in L2 Spanish. This study extends Huensch and Nagle [ Language Learning, 71, 626–668, (2021)], who explored the partial independence among the global speech dimensions for speech samples taken from a picture narrative task. Given that the type of speaking task used to elicit speech samples has been shown…
Exploring phonetic predictors of intelligibility, comprehensibility, and foreign accent in L2 Spanish speech
Although current approaches to second language (L2) pronunciation underscore that instruction should concentrate on pronunciation features that help learners be more intelligible (and not necessarily more native like), there is little empirical evidence as to what those features are, especially in languages other than English. To address this gap, this exploratory study examined phonetic predictors of listener‐based dimensions—namely, intelligibi…

The Effect of Speaker Proficiency on Intelligibility, Comprehensibility, and Accentedness in L2 Spanish
This study investigated the relationship among intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness in the speech of second language learners of Spanish of varying proficiency in instructed contexts. It conceptually replicated studies by Munro and Derwing (1995a) and Derwing and Munro (1997), who found partial independence among the three speech dimensions but also evidence that proficiency may mediate the relationship between linguistic features…
After Study Abroad
For L2 learners from English‐dominant societies, study abroad (SA) is an especially significant opportunity for linguistic, sociocultural, and personal development. Less is known about the durability of these SA‐related developments, once Anglophone language specialists complete their home studies and then progress to graduate careers. This article reports a study of 33 specialist languages graduates from a UK university, 3 years postgraduation, …
The pronunciation teaching practices of university‐level graduate teaching assistants of French and Spanish introductory language courses
This study combined evidence from survey, interview, and classroom observation data to better understand the amount and type of pronunciation instruction and corrective feedback practices in French and Spanish introductory language courses (i.e., the first four semesters) at the university level in the United States. Data consisted of responses ( n = 142) to a national survey and audiorecorded interviews (6 hours) and classroom observations (22 h…
How the initiation and resolution of repair sequences act as a device for the co-construction of membership and identity
This conversation analytic paper investigates how speakers self-position or are other-positioned as members of a certain social group (e.g., competent speakers of a language) through other-initiated repair. Findings illustrate the complexity of linguistic membership categories by demonstrating that they continually shift depending on local interactional goals and documenting how shifts are accomplished. The different levels and types of linguisti…
Contextualizing Attitudes Toward Pronunciation
While previous work has shown a relationship between pronunciation attitudes and pronunciation performance, the connection between language learning motivation and pronunciation attitudes has been underexplored. This study investigated the relationship between 195 foreign language learners’ attitudes toward pronunciation, the foreign languages studied, extramural language activity, and motivation. With an online three‐part survey, information was…
