Nuclear Waste Management, Nuclear Power, and Energy Choices: Public Preferences, Perceptions, and Trust
Worrying About Terrorism and Other Acute Environmental Health Hazard Events
Objectives. To better understand why some people worry more about terrorism compared with others, we measured how much US residents worried about a terrorist event in their area and examined the association of their fears with their concerns about acute and chronic hazards and other correlates. Methods. In 2008 (n = 600) and 2010 (n = 651), we performed a random-digit dialing national landline telephone survey. We asked about worries about terror…
Food Pantries, Poverty, and Social Justice
Gwen operates a food pantry in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Lauren helps at the pantry, and Michael periodically assists. In 2007, when Gwen started managing the food pantry, about 250–300 people would come each month to receive food. It was not gourmet dining (canned tuna, vegetables, tomatoes, spaghetti, rice, peanut butter, dried beans, and so on), but the people appreciated the gift, and the church could manage the distribution with a handful o…

Local health officers' views on hazardous waste remediation
Hazardous waste sites are a priority for local health officers in New Jersey. However, most officers feel that they are not adequately briefed or consulted by federal and state officials who manage site remediation. Consequently, many local health officers tend to be neutral or negative about federal and state site remediation plans. Consultation with local health officers should be formally built into the site remediation process, and officers s…

The Confrontation with Nazism at Rutgers: Academic Bureaucracy and Moral Failure
Near the end of 1940 Friedrich Hauptmann secretly fled to his native Germany, forsaking Rutgers University where he was chairman of the German department at the New Jersey College for Women (N.J.C.). Despite having acquired American citizenship the previous year (several months before the start of World War II), Hauptmann traveled on a German passport, with expenses paid by the Hitler government. This was undoubtedly a reward for “serving ‘the cu…
Research Policy and Review 16. Geographical Disparities in State Cancer-Prevention Policies: The Need for Strong Federal Intervention
Analysis of changes in cancer mortality rates and cancer prevention programs shows that the states that experienced the sharpest increases in cancer mortality during the last thirty years have the weakest cancer-prevention programs. The federal government should intervene to increase cancer prevention, especially in these laggard states

Solid-Waste Management: A Test of Alternative Strategies Using Optimization Techniques
The objective of this paper is to determine how residential solid waste has been and could be disposed of or reused in metropolitan regions. By means of optimization techniques, the authors examine the economic efficiency of landfilling, energy and materials recovery, and waste-transportation technologies at centralized and dispersed sites. The results indicate that dry-fuel technology is the most efficient system for the near future. Pyrolysis, …
First mothers rooming-in with their newborns: Its impact upon the mother
A study of first mothers Rooming-in with their newborns in a Swedish hospital was completed by comparing fifty Rooming-in mothers with fifty Non-Rooming-in mothers. There was complete randomization in the selection procedure. Rooming-in mothers judged themselves to be more confident and competent in baby care, thought they would need less help in caring for their infants at home, and could attribute more to their babies' cries than the Non-Roomin…

India's Independence and the War
THE failure of the Cripps mission to end the political impasse in India was undoubtedly a serious blow to the United Nations. Whatever reasoning on the India question might have been valid before the present situation took shape, the overriding consideration in the spring of I942 was to enlist India's millions in the world-wide struggle against the Axis. Three months ago PACIFIC AFFAIRS published an article by Kate Mitchell analyzing India's econ…

The Soviet-German War and the Far East
EVERY SO often-nowadays perhaps more frequently than ever-history takes a sharp turn. Such a turn to the entire world situation was given on June 22, I94I, by the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. It denoted not merely a quantitative extension of existing conflict to new areas, but a major change in the relation of forces, a re-direction of the conflict itself. One of the striking features of the Second World War and its diplomatic preparation h…
