  • Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals

    Open Access•Xuantong Wang, James Hopeward et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2022•References: 8

This paper presents a low‐cost and scalable method for providing a sustainable water allocation for enterprises based on the hydrological, economic, and demographic contexts of their facilities. Context‐based performance indicators are vital for effectively monitoring and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Currently, the SDGs consist of 17 goals that are associated with 169 targets and 232 indicators. Making valid and objective m…

  • Apostasy of an "Anti-Assessment" Curmudgeon

    Peter C Sutton, Paul C Sutton et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2022•References: 20

Apostasy is defined as the abandonment or renunciation of a religious or political belief. This article describes the apostasy of a professor of geography with respect to their initial hostility toward the utility of learning outcomes assessments. This apostasy motivated the development of assessment instruments that could provide evidence that graduating geography and environmental science majors possessed more skills and knowledge and confidenc…

  • The global value of coastal wetlands for storm protection

    Open Access•R Costanza, Sharolyn J Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 1

Coastal wetlands provide a range of valuable ecosystem services, including protecting coastal communities from storms. We estimated for the first time the global value of these storm protection services for all coastal wetlands for both damages avoided and lives saved. We used the historical tracks of 1,014 tropical cyclones since 1902 that recorded property damage and/or human casualties in 71 countries/regions. We used Bayesian and OLS statisti…

  • Characteristics associated with high and low levels of ecological literacy in a western society

Sheryn D Pitman, Christopher B Daniels et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

The integrity of the relationship between humanity and nature is fundamental to the health and survival of our species. Humans have always required knowledge and understanding of the planet’s life-supporting systems. Such knowledge and understanding form the basis of ecological literacy which, we suggest, is fundamental to the sustainability of human settlements. An assessment of South Australian adults showed positive correlations between ecolog…

  • Ecological literacy and socio-demographics

Sheryn D Pitman, Christopher B Daniels et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Ecological literacy is founded upon knowledge and understanding about how the ecological systems of the Earth function and support life. A widespread concern that levels of ecological literacy within many contemporary human communities are inadequate to enable effective decision-making about sustainable ways of living led to a rigorous and carefully designed assessment of over 1000 South Australian adults from diverse sectors including industry, …

  • Is Decoupling GDP Growth from Environmental Impact Possible?

    Open Access•James D Ward, James Hopeward et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2016

The argument that human society can decouple economic growth-defined as growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP)-from growth in environmental impacts is appealing. If such decoupling is possible, it means that GDP growth is a sustainable societal goal. Here we show that the decoupling concept can be interpreted using an easily understood model of economic growth and environmental impact. The simple model is compared to historical data and modelled …

  • The Future of Ecosystem Services in Asia and the Pacific

Open Access•Ida Kubiszewski, Sharolyn Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Asia & the Pacific Policy Studies•2016•References: 3

We estimated the current value of ecosystem services for terrestrial ecosystems in 47 countries in the Asia and the Pacific region. Currently, these provide $US14 trillion/yr. in benefits, most of which are non‐marketed and do not show up in GDP. We also estimated the changes in terrestrial ecosystem services value for scenarios to the year 2050, built around the four Great Transition Initiative archetypes: (1) Market Forces (MF); (2) Fortress Wo…

  • Evaluating the Compliance of Sea Turtle Light Ordinances in Florida Using Remote Sensing

    Open Access•Sharolyn J Anderson, Sharolyn Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2013•References: 10

Satellite-based remote sensing has essentially been absent from processes evaluating compliance with environmental policy. Through a case study of the observance of sea turtle light ordinances in Florida, this study seeks to demonstrate that remotely sensed data can be beneficial in evaluation of environmental policy compliance. As a means to increase the successful sea turtle nesting rate, 21 counties and several other municipalities adapted pol…

  • Alone in the Void

    Open Access•Peter C Sutton, Paul Sutton•ARTICLE•Humanities•2012

It is estimated that roughly seventy billion human beings have lived out their lives on planet earth. It is very unlikely that any of the seven billion currently enjoying this planet will be living out the rest of their life any place else. Nonetheless, many of our movies and much of our literature envisions easy space travel that is scientifically unrealistic. On July 24th, 2012 Adam Frank, a professor of physics and astronomy, wrote an op-ed pi…

We take a fresh look at geography curricula and their appropriateness to the demands of the 21st century. We reflect on the purpose, content and relevance of undergraduate geography curricula in an age of ‘supercomplexity’. Geography curricula, by their nature, are varied and multiple, with different countries often privileging different types of geographical knowledge and skills. The paper emerges from a group of US and UK geographers and so foc…

  • The Value of Coastal Wetlands for Hurricane Protection

    R Costanza, Octavio Pérez-Maqueo et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2008•Cited by: 5

Coastal wetlands reduce the damaging effects of hurricanes on coastal communities. A regression model using 34 major US hurricanes since 1980 with the natural log of damage per unit gross domestic product in the hurricane swath as the dependent variable and the natural logs of wind speed and wetland area in the swath as the independent variables was highly significant and explained 60% of the variation in relative damages. A loss of 1 ha of wetla…

  • The Caribbean after Grenada

Open Access•Robert Polk Thomson, Robert Thomson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•1985

Caribbeana has become a growth industry in the wake of the United States invasion of Grenada. The veritable explosion of analysis, speculation, and general academic interest in the area has produced a good deal of decent material which would have been ignored or never have appeared were it not for the tragic events of October 1983. The three books reviewed here are but the tip of an iceberg; yet they provide a good basis for examining the events …
