  • Split Lexical Insertion in Parasitic Gap Constructions

    Open Access•Brian Agbayani, Masao Ochi•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2023

We propose to extend the feature movement theory (Chomsky 1995; Ochi 1999; Lasnik 1999, 2001; Agbayani 1998, 2000, 2006; Agbayani & Ochi 2006) by claiming that the separation of formal features (FF) from the rest of a lexical item occurs not only in syntactic movement but also in the course of lexical insertion. Applying this hypothesis to Parasitic Gap constructions, we argue that the FF and the rest of the lexical item are merged into the Paras…

  • Overt Object Shift in Japanese

    Open Access•Masao Ochi•ARTICLE•Syntax•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 26

This paper argues that the DP object in Japanese always moves to the domain of vP in overt syntax. The main argument for this hypothesis comes from the transitivity restriction imposed on the genitive-subject construction in this language. I argue that once the object is shifted to the edge of vP, the subject in the inner specifier of vP is rendered inaccessible from the higher phase head. This hypothesis also derives the well-known ban on multip…
