The cybersecurity dilemma game
Faced with ubiquitous cyber-attacks, the field of cybersecurity is scrambling to develop both technical solutions as indicated by incessant streams of updates, and social solutions as indicated by a surge of awareness campaigns. However, it is increasingly clear that the dominating underlying narrative of solutionism–the conviction that relatively neat technical or social fixes can be found to well-defined problems–is strangely out of sync with a…
Valuing Data
As datafication proceeds rapidly, a large, unwieldy amount of data is available online. In this article, we ask: How valuable is this data, how is it made valuable? To answer this question, we study how online data is endowed with worth in virtual collaboration workshops. Our workshops challenged participants to assert and question the worth of online data – a challenge that participants addressed by using a set of techniques of which we describe…
Situating machine learning – On the calibration of problems in practice
In this paper, we employ John Dewey’s notion of the situation as an analytic lens for observing and theorizing machine learning. Based on two ethnographic case studies in art and science, we account for machine learning as practice and examine the dynamics of the situations it gives rise to. Following Dewey, our observations focus on the transformation of situations from an initial state of indeterminacy through to problematizations and their res…
On time
This special issue is about the ways in which mobilities, as they are made and lived, tamper with a multiplicity of entwined normative and temporal orderings. Questions concerning the entwinement of temporal and normative orderings are not only a challenge for social theory. Mobilities, notably, make the intricate multiplicity of normative and temporal orderings a palpable, everyday issue: Distant spheres have to be linked, gaps to be bridged, co…
The moral work of timing mobilities
Timing urban traffic is moral work. In this paper, I show how the moral work that goes into timing traffic lights addresses both industrial, civic, and domestic worth in ways that cut generalization short. Relying upon ethnographic fieldwork, this paper focuses on how municipal traffic engineering maintains traffic lights and handles complaints about them. Steeped in moral ambiguity, the paper argues, municipal traffic engineering resorts to sing…
Making Cases
The article proceeds from the observation that in everyday life we are surrounded by technology, most of which we do not use ourselves. Rather, we are, often involuntarily, subjected to the effects of others’ technology use. The article characterizes this condition as affected bystanding, a condition that comes with quotidian, often banal, experiences of passivity and marginality. The affected bystander is neither entirely included nor excluded b…
