The article summarizes the data on the planigraphy, chronology and funerary practice of the “minor” necropolises of Gonur Depe site (Southeastern Turkmenistan, 2300–1500 cal. BC). The analyzed necropolises are located in several excavation areas of Gonur North (8, 12, 16 and 18) and on the satellite settlement of Gonur-20. Between the taiga and the steppe: A new find of the "bears in a sacrificial pose" plaque from the Upper Ob region
The purpose of this study is a comprehensive analysis of a new find of a plaque depicting "bears in a sacrifi-cial pose" from the Chumysh-Perekat necropolis. Such artifacts were widespread in the early Middle Ages in the taiga, forest and forest-steppe zone of Eurasia in vast territories from the Urals to the Achinsk-Mariinsk forest-steppe. The Chumysh-Perekat necropolis is located in the Upper Ob region, in the north-east of Altai Krai, on the r…
Phitomorphic designs among the materials from excavations at Gonur-Depe
This paper discusses the phitomorphic designs revealed at Gonur-Depe which is one of the most well- known sites of Ancient Margiana. On the basis of analysis of objects shaped as plants or bearing plant representations, a conclusion is drawn that the phitomorphic designs are divided into three groups: those common to other cultures of the Ancient East, examples known predominantly within the borders of the Bactrian-Margiana archaeological culture…
Semiyarka IV burial complex of the Middle Bronze Age (Eastern Kazakhstan)
The paper is aimed at the analysis of the Middle Bronze Age materials from the Semiyarka IV burial ground in East Kazakhstan. In 2016-2018, two stone fences on the site were investigated by a joint expedition of the Altai and Pavlodar State Universities. The two fences contained human burials, inhumed in a wooden structure and in a composite stone cist box. The purpose of this work is to determine regional features and chronology of the Semiyarka…
New polychrome painting from Gonur Depe, Turkmenistan
Excavations at Gonur Oasis in the ancient delta of the Murghab River revealed a unique polychrome painting at the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex. The formation of human populations in South and Central Asia
Ancient human movements through Asia Ancient DNA has allowed us to begin tracing the history of human movements across the globe. Narasimhan et al. identify a complex pattern of human migrations and admixture events in South and Central Asia by performing genetic analysis of more than 500 people who lived over the past 8000 years (see the Perspective by Schaefer and Shapiro). They establish key phases in the population prehistory of Eurasia, incl…
Horses from atypical Turkic period burials in southwest Siberia
The article presents the results of a zooarchaeological research of two horse skeletons from atypical Turkic period burials found in the necropolis Chumysh-Perekat (Altai Kray, Russia). The remains belong to 5 and 10-12-year-old male horses. Macromorphological analysis showed some dental (wear on P2, over growths of M1, and irregular wear of M1) and bone pathologies (fusion of the splint bone with metapodia, lumbar vertebrae). Their presence is a…
