Computational Social and Behavioral Science
Big data: Un'opportunità per le scienze sociali
In recent years, Big Data and Big Data science are frontstage both in prestigious scientific institutions around the world, and in the media. Italy has contributed to the launch of Big Data science in Europe. With more than eight hundred million quotes on Google, Big Data is one of the most cited technoscientific tags. Furthermore, since 2009, when Lazar and colleagues published the famous «Computational Social Science» on Science, Big Data scien…
Towards Computational and Behavioral Social Science
In the last few years, the study of social phenomena has hosted a renewal of interest in Computational Social Science (CSS). While this field is not new – Axelrod’s first computational work on the evolution of cooperation goes back to 1981 – CSS has recently resurged under the pressure of quantitative social science and the application of Big Data analytics to social datasets. However, Big Data is no panacea and the data deluge that it provides r…
Self-Policing Through Norm Internalization: A Cognitive Solution to the Tragedy of the Digital Commons in Social Networks
In the seminal work 'An Evolutionary Approach to Norms', Axelrod identified internalization as one of the key mechanisms that supports the spreading and stabilization of norms. But how does this process work? This paper advocates a rich cognitive model of different types, degrees and factors of norm internalization. Rather than a none-or-all phenomenon, we claim that norm internalization is a dynamic process, whose deepest step occurs when norms …
On agent-based modeling and computational social science
In the first part of the paper, the field of agent-based modeling (ABM) is discussed focusing on the role of generative theories, aiming at explaining phenomena by growing them. After a brief analysis of the major strengths of the field some crucial weaknesses are analyzed. In particular, the generative power of ABM is found to have been underexploited, as the pressure for simple recipes has prevailed and shadowed the application of rich cognitiv…
"On the Interplay between Extortion and Punishment. An Agent Based Model of "Camorra
This paper presents an Agent-Based Model aimed to reproduce the demographics, economic and employment variables of a Southern Italian region (Campania) where one specific variant of Extortion Racketeering Systems (Erss), camorra, is highly active and prosperous. Preliminary results of a set of simulations show the effects of varying levels of extortion and punishment on the rates of inactivity, employment, etc. of a population of agents endowed w…
The Norm-Signaling Effects of Group Punishment: Combining Agent-Based Simulation and Laboratory Experiments
Punishment plays a crucial role in favoring and maintaining social order. Recent studies emphasize the effect of the norm-signaling function of punishment. However, very little attention has been paid so far to the potential of group punishment. We claim that when inflicted by an entire group, the recipient of punishment views it as expressing norms. The experiments performed in this work provide evidence that humans are motivated not only by mat…
A convention or (tacit) agreement betwixt us: On reliance and its normative consequences
The aim of this paper is to clarify what kind of normativity characterizes a convention. First, we argue that conventions have normative consequences because they always involve a form of trust and reliance. We contend that it is by reference to a moral principle impinging on these aspects (i.e. the principle of Reliability) that interpersonal obligations and rights originate from conventional regularities. Second, we argue that the system of mut…
Manifesto of computational social science
The increasing integration of technology into our lives has created unprecedented volumes of data on society’s everyday behaviour. Such data opens up exciting new opportunities to work towards a quantitative understanding of our complex social systems, within the realms of a new discipline known as Computational Social Science. Against a background of financial crises, riots and international epidemics, the urgent need for a greater comprehension…
Societŕ artificiali. Il caso delle norme
This article is inspired by Joshua Epstein's generativist paradigm, according to which to possibility of explaining a phenomenon and of influencing its process of existence depend on the availability of instruments that can artificially reproduce it, or in other words simulate its «generation». «Agent based simulation » possesses the requirements that enable the development of a similar cognitive program. The essay describes this instrument's cha…

FuturICT and Social Sciences: Big Data, Big Thinking”
Why do financial markets crash again and again? How can we construct resilient institutions? What determines human happiness and well-‐being, and how are they influenced by personal wealth? How can society change behaviours that destroy our environment and other important public goods? Big Data, combined with a multi-disciplinary approach, may help to find answers to these and other questions, which could not be well answered in the past
What Do Agent-Based and Equation-Based Modelling Tell Us About Social Conventions: The Clash Between ABM and EBM in a Congestion Game Framework
In this work simulation-based and analytical results on the emergence steady states in traffic-like interactions are presented and discussed. The objective of the paper is twofold: i) investigating the role of social conventions in coordination problem situations, and more specifically in congestion games; ii) comparing simulation-based and analytical results to figure out what these methodologies can tell us on the subject matter. Our main issue…

Artificial Societies: The Computer Simulation of Social Life
An exploration of the implications of developments in artificial intelligence for social scientific research, which builds on the theoretical and methodological insights provided by "Simulating societies".; This book is intended for worldwide library market for social science subjects such as sociology, political science, geography, archaeology/anthropology, and significant appeal within computer science, particularly artificial intelligence. Als…
Dynamics of Status Symbols and Social Complexity
In this article, a symbolic version of the Simmel effect has been explored via computer simulation. The Simmel effect refers to the dynamics of status symbols in hierarchically ordered societies. This phenomenon was highlighted by the sociologist Georg Simmel, when he attempted to explain the rapid diffusion and decline of fashion. Simmel hypothesized that the instability of fashion results from the combined action of imitation of higher status m…

Simulating Social Phenomena
Cognitive And Social Action
This monograph addresses the worlds of social science theory and artificial intelligence AI. The book examines the interaction of individual cognitive factors and social influence on human action and discusses the implications for developments in artificial intelligence.; This book is intended for graduate and research level artificial intelligence and social science theory including sociology, economics, psychology
Depnet: How to benefit from social dependence
In this paper, two different views of sociality, one based upon interferences, and the other based upon complementarity, or interdependence, are confronted. The latter is shown to present a number of theoretical advantages over the former, allowing for an account of different types of social actions— influencing, exchange, cooperation—and of how these emerge from structural social conditions. A formal model of dependence relations is presented, a…
