  • Kittlitz’s Murrelet Seasonal Distribution and Post-breeding Migration from the Gulf of Alaska to the Arctic Ocean

    Open Access•John F Piatt, David C Douglas et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2022

Kittlitz’s Murrelets (Brachyramphus brevirostris) nest during summer in glaciated or recently deglaciated (post-Wisconsin) landscapes. They forage in adjacent marine waters, especially those influenced by glacial meltwater. Little is known of their movements and distribution outside the breeding season. To identify post-breeding migrations of murrelets, we attached satellite transmitters to birds (n = 47) captured at sea in the Gulf of Alaska and…

  • Journal Kept by David Douglas during his Travels in North America 1823–1827

Open Access•David C Douglas, David Douglas•BOOK•Journal Kept by David Douglas…•2011

David Douglas (1799–1834), the influential Scottish botanist and plant collector, trained as a gardener before attending Perth College and Glasgow University. His genius for botany flourished and his talents came to the attention of the Royal Horticultural Society. With the society's backing he went to North America in 1823, beginning his life-long fascination with the region's flora. He discovered thousands of new species and introduced 240 of t…

  • Assessment of sea‐ice conditions using two‐channel active and passive microwave systems 1

    G I Bel'chanskiy, David C Douglas et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•1996

An algorithm is developed and tested for assessing the types and concentrations of sea ice on the basis of data obtained from two‐band active and passive microwave sensors, using a priori values of the scattering parameters and natural emission of basic types of ice for the corresponding characteristics of the observation system—frequency, polarization, and observation angle—and a linear mixture model for the measured radiobrightness temperature …

  • Assessing trends in Arctic sea-ice distribution in the Barents and Kara seas using the Kosmos–Okean satellite series

    Open Access•Gennady I Belchansky, I N Mordvintsev et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1995•References: 1

Trends in the annual minimum sea-ice extent, determined by three criteria (absolute annual minimum, minimum monthly mean, and the extent at the end of August), were investigated for the Barents and western Kara seas and adjacent parts of the Arctic Ocean during 1984–1993. Four definitions of ice extent were examined, based on thresholds of ice concentration: >90%, >70%, >40%, and >10% (El, E2, E3, and E4, respectively). Trends were studied using …

  • Comparative evaluation of Almaz, ERS-1, Jers-1, and Landsat-TM for discriminating wet tundra habitats

    Open Access•Gennady I Belchansky, Gregory K Ovchinnikov et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1995•References: 2

Systematic image-classification methods were applied to ALMAZ, ERS-1, and JERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and Landsat-TM multispectral satellite images to evaluate the relative information content of the satellite data for discriminating wet tundra habitats in northern Alaska. Results suggest that SAR data can be used to concurrently detect a maximum of four or five landcover classes using the methods of this study. Combining two or more SA…

Though the subject of this paper is over-large, its purpose was begotten of piety, not presumption. If, therefore, I lack the confidence which pertains to discovery, I am not for that reason without my apology; and I aspire to the hope that the Fellows of this Society may deem it a seemly relaxation to pause from their labours for the space of an hour in order to reflect gratefully upon some of their forerunners in learning. Between 1660 and 1730…

    David C Douglas•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•1939

TT is now more than forty years since John Horace Round inaugurated a new epoch in English feudal scholarship by discovering origins of English knight-service not in AngloSaxon custom but in bargains by which Conqueror fixed number of knights due for his service from each of his greater followers.2 The doctrine was at time a startling heresy3; it has since been developed into severest orthodoxy; and we are now authoritatively taught4 that after N…
