This essay explores how the vampires Spike and Angel in the television program Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003) offer new ways, including feminist readings, within which to reappraise the Rebel without a Cause archetype. Areas discussed include the juvenile delinquent as ‘monstrous other’ in today's society, youth culture's perpetual quest for meaning and identity, and associated popular music narratives
