Microclimate Behaviour Inside Archival Boxes, Books, and Paper Stacks
Paper-based heritage objects are commonly stored in archival boxes, books, and paper stacks, creating confined microclimates that may differ from the surrounding environment. While room-level climate control is central to preventive conservation, object-level conditions are shaped by enclosure permeability, hygroscopic buffering, ventilation, and internal emissions. This study investigates temperature, relative humidity, air exchange, and gaseous…
Mass-Transfer Air Pollution Modeling in Heritage Buildings
Two simple mass-balance models for estimating the concentration of air pollutants inside buildings are presented for pollutants originating from outdoors or generated indoors. The models can be used to establish average pollution loads on heritage objects inside buildings and assist in risk assessment for conservation. The models can be run with a minimum of data, either based on fixed conditions or as a Monte Carlo simulation based on plausible …
Determining the level of organic acid air pollution in museum storage rooms by mass-balance modelling
Formic acid and acetic acid are among the most critical indoor air pollutants causing damage to museum collections. Many museums, however, lack funds and expertise to conduct detailed environmental monitoring to survey the level of organic acids in the air of collection areas. We demonstrate how a mass-balance calculation, based on data obtained from estimated factors and from literature can be used instead. The model was applied on a real museum…
