  • Erasing boundaries: Researching the emancipation process of Roma women within the framework of the heroines project

Open Access•Bojana Bogdanovic, Lada Stevanović et al.•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2025

Contemporary societies, both globally and locally, are becoming increasingly aware of the need for inclusiveness and equality, especially when it comes to those social groups that have historically been neglected or marginalized. Women?s empowerment, in a broader context, is becoming one of the key mechanisms in the fight against discrimination and inequality. Its role is particularly significant in cases where women, in addition to gender-based,…

  • Women’s education, knowledge and competence in Ancient Greece

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2023•References: 8

The paper deals with women?s education in Ancient Greece. In ancient times, women were dominated by men throughout the Greek world, while their roles and competence were strictly defined (albeit differently across various city-states). Although not all women were deprived of education, their education was almost never organized by the city-state. Women?s knowledge and voice were never welcome in the public domain. However, the picture of women?s …

  • The Classics between Disciplines and Theories: The Anthropology of Ancient Worlds

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Etnoantropološki problemi /…•2022

The paper presents the work of the French School of Anthropology of Ancient Worlds, which was developing intensively among the researchers gathered around the Centre Louis Gernet in Paris, named after the pioneer of this approach. This epistemological turn in researching classics is the consequence of the intersection of the classics, history, anthropology, sociology, archaeology, and different critical theories. The shift does not only refer to …

  • Humour and Antiquity in Film: Roman Scandals and Monty Python’s Life of Brian

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Etnoantropološki problemi /…•2021

Antiquity appears in films from the very beginning of cinema. As in other examples of reception, the presence of antiquity depends on the context of reception, the specificity of the medium which includes the relationship with the audience, as well as the personal mark of the author. The subject of this paper are two movies set in antiquity: Roman Scandals (1933) and The Life of Brian (1977). Both films are comedies, the plots of which are set in…

  • Never on Sunday: Feminist questioning of dominant epistemology and philosophical tradition

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2021

Through the interpretation of the movie Never on Sunday (1960) by Jules Dassin, this paper opens some important epistemological questions from the feminist perspective. Namely, the film is set in the contemporary Greece, while the main characters are a prostitute Ilia and an American tourist Homer, who is at the same time disappointed in Greece and in the beautiful woman he meets. His inability to understand people and social context in which he …

  • Ancient Myth in Brazilian Cinematography: Black Orpheus

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Etnoantropološki problemi /…•2020

The paper deals with two film adaptations of the myth of Orpheus that were made in Brazil in 1959 and 1999. In view of the fact that in both films Orpheus appears as Afro-Brazilian, these two versions of the myth may be related to Sartre’s concept of Black Orpheus, and the movement of Negritude that appeared in Paris in the 1930s as an answer of the black francophone intellectuals to racial myths and colonial stereotypes. Regarding the fact that …

  • Black Humor on the Film Screen: From Folk to Popular Culture

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Etnoantropološki problemi /…•2019

The paper is dealing with the complex phenomenon of black humor. Starting from different definitions about its origin, the author questions its folklore origin in Greek antiquity. Through the prism of the theories of Olga Freidneberg and Michael Bakhtin, parody and/or carneval appear as a worldview contrary and at the same time parallel to the serious, official, hierarchical order. Exactly this image of the world, and conceptualization of death o…

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2019

The film Face to face (1963) has been directed by Branko Bauer and is often regarded to be the first political and critical film in Yugoslavia. The plot is set on a workers’ council, after a worker has been fired and his colleague (Milun Koprivica) stands up for him and openly confront the director. • Gender and order. Gender regimes in culture - today and through history

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2019

The theme of the volume brings six papers devoted to the research of gender in the frame of ethnology and anthropology, but also in the wider interdisciplinary frame. This interdisciplinary intertwinement represents characteristic that is related to the gender and women studies, so I turn also to the appearance of these topics in the local frame of ethnology and anthropology, but also in the wider context of the development of schools and academi…

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2018•References: 1

The paper deals with the relationship between two academic disciplines: anthropology and Classics that was changing through the time. • Religious and secular models of power achieved through funeral ritual: Ancient paradigms

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2016

This paper researches why and in which way Athenian polis, and since Byzantine era also the Church, made efforts to take over the control over funeral rite. How, why and under which circumstances pagan ritual moved from private to public sphere? How were the roles in the ritual distributed? In which way the elements of pagan rite were integrated in Christian funeral and what was the power-game between Pagans and Christians? Which social potential…

This paper explores the intersection of death and ideology in the sphere of popular culture, as exemplified by the afterlife destiny of Toše Proeski, a Macedonian pop singer whose huge popularity continued even after his death. His sudden, untimely death in his twenties had exploded as huge news, preoccupying all sorts of media. What I am interested in this paper is what has happened afterwards. In which way his popularity and his afterlife conti…

The theme of this paper is the magic power of the obscene words and jokes in traditional Serbian culture, on the example of women’s only festival revena in Banat. This ritual represents one day holiday that was celebrated in the beginning of spring, before the Eastern Fast. During revena women gathered for a celebration during which their behavior was completely different than usual, transgressing all the strict norms that prevailed in everyday r…

  • Medea in the past and in the present: (Re)constructing the identity of a woman and a foreigner in the novel Medea by Christa Wolf

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2010

One of the most shocking, the most difficult to understand and at the same time the most inspiring tragedy from the Greek antiquity is Euripeides' Medea. This drama has a rich and a long history of adaptations that have always represented an interface between the ancient text on the one hand, and the author's reading on the other, which always depended on cultural and political context of the period that influenced the perspective of the author. …

  • Human or superhuman: The concept of hero in ancient Greek religion and/in politics

    Open Access•Lada Stevanović•ARTICLE•Glasnik Etnografskog instituta•2008•References: 3

The word hero appears in Greek language with a twofold meaning. On one hand it is used for denoting a divine being, who lived a mortal life, but after doing some great deed deserved to become god. On the other hand, the hero stands for great and brave warrior who is ready to give his life in order to gain immortal glory, and continue to live in the social sphere, in the memory of his descendants. Exactly this epic narrative survived and was explo…
