The Ahmose ‘Tempest Stela’, Thera and Comparative Chronology
Dating the Thera (Santorini) eruption
The date of the Late Bronze Age Minoan eruption of the Thera volcano has provoked much debate among archaeologists, not least in a recent issue of Antiquity ('Bronze Age catastrophe and modern controversy: dating the Santorini eruption', March 2014). Here, the authors respond to those recent contributions, citing evidence that closes the gap between the conclusions offered by previous typological, stratigraphic and radiometric dating techniques. …
Dendera
The ancient site of Dendera is located on the West Bank of the Nile (26°80′ 30.39′′ N and 32° 4′ 13.01′′ E), about 6 km west of the modern town of Qena, where the Nile forms a wide bend.
Edfu
The town of Edfu is situated on the west bank of the Nile (24°58′37.92′′ N and 32°52′19.72′′ E), halfway between Luxor and Aswan.
Unsealing Tell Edfu, Egypt
The two most frequently encountered sealing motifs discovered at Tell Edfu show decorative patterns that make the identification of their respective owners extremely difficult, in contrast to private name sealings dating to the late Middle Kingdom and early Second Intermediate Period (ca. 1770–1650 b.c.e.) that offer names and titles of officials operating on the local and national level. Decorative motifs per se do not reveal any details about t…
A New Royal Name Sealing from Tell Edfu
The recent excavations at Tell Edfu have led to the discovery of a new Middle Kingdom sealing which was found in an administrative building. It shows the standing figure of the king wearing the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt and has a small cartouche in front of his face that can be read as the throne name of Amenemhat III. This is the first time that such a motif has been discovered in a secure late Middle Kingdom context
Evidence for Urban Walling in the Third Millennium bc
A tradition of enclosure walls developed in Egypt very early on. Until recently the evidence was primarily artistic, in the shape of depictions on several late prehistoric palettes of symbols representing enclosed areas of square layout with rounded corners and numerous external buttresses. These images seem to depict walled inhabited settlements, and they belong to artistic compositions that also portray fighting and other violence; and together…
