Achievement Conflict and Level of Performance
Ss conflicted or nonconflicted in the achievement area, as assessed by Worell and Worell's Personality Conflict Scale, were compared on number of arithmetic problems completed in consecutive 2-min. periods. Ss whose scale responses indicated a preference for achievement but the presence of competing behaviors in achievement situations (high conflict) completed significantly fewer arithmetic problems than Ss whose responses indicated not only high…
Differences in Reaction to Frustration as a Function of Need for Approval
Differences in reaction to frustration on the Rosenzweig P-F test were assessed for high and low n approval Ss (as measured by the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability scale). as compared with the low group, high n approval Ss gave significantly fewer E responses ( p < .025) but more M responses ( p < .05). No differences were found for the 1 category
Effects of Approval Motivation and Varying Conditions of Verbal Reinforcement on Incidental Memory for Faces
An attempt was made to determine whether high and low n approval Ss showed differences in incidental memory for faces after these stimuli were associated with positive, negative, or no (control) verbal reinforcement. Results were that the high n approval Ss, as a group, demonstrated greater incidental memory than did the low group ( p < .01). It was also found that high n approval Ss performed best under positive reinforcement while demonstrating…
Operation of Conflict in Selective and Reversal Learning
Blocks of free and forced reinforced trials were combined to provide rats swimming underwater in a Y-maze with one of two levels of conflict. Strong conflict was induced by requiring animals to make 4 left and 3 right reinforced runs within each block; weak conflict by 4 left and 1 right per block. In reversal, all animals were given successive blocks of 6 reinforced rights and 1 reinforced left. Findings were that strong conflict reliably retard…
