Discourses of Desire in Ancient Greece and Rome
This chapter presents an overview of key views on erotic desire and its management as well as common practices and norms in the Greek and Roman worlds from the seventh century BCE to the third century CE. No single canonical text or religious moral code existed that prescribed sexual relations. Instead, we rely on their rich textual and visual culture to reconstruct standards, attitudes, and practices. We know most about the sexuality of elite ma…
Sexual Labor in the Athenian Courts
Oratory is a valuable source for reconstructing the practices, legalities, and attitudes surrounding sexual labor in classical Athens. It provides evidence of male and female sex laborers, sex slaves, brothels, sex traffickers, the cost of sex, contracts for sexual labor, and manumission practices for sex slaves. Yet the witty, wealthy, and independent hetaira , well-known from other genres, does not feature. Its detailed narratives and character…
The Brothel of Pompeii
184 PHOENIX mostly repurposed from older publications. Alternatives exist, including excellent digital platforms such as SITAR, directed by M. Serlorenzi.4 In general, this series has not been known for its theoretical advances, but there is valuable material for future inquiries of that type, including on the durability of republican ideas or on the ability of architecture and monumental space to encode history. Others will think of other paths …
Gender and Slavery
This chapter investigates the relation between gender and slavery among the Greeks and Romans. It considers the gendered division of labour for slaves with a special emphasis on female slaves and female masters in the domestic context. Important topics covered include sexual violence against slaves, manumission, and prostitutes as slaves. It argues that female slaves were most common in domestic contexts and the sex and entertainment industry. Bo…
Houses of Ill Repute
Houses of Ill Repute is the first book to focus on the difficulties of distinguishing between private homes and buildings, such as brothels and taverns, which housed activities neither public nor private in ancient Greece, providing a way forward for the study of domestic and entertainment spaces in the Hellenic world.
Beyond Courtesans and Whores
Beyond Courtesans and Whores:Sex and Labor in the Greco-Roman World Allison Glazebrook (bio) It was not until the late 1990s that scholarship on ancient prostitution came into its own in North America. Thomas McGinn's important monograph, Prostitution, Sexuality and the Law in Ancient Rome, was published by The University of Michigan Press in 1998, followed six years later by The Economy of Prostitution in the Roman World: A Study of Social Histo…
Prostitutes, Plonk, and Play
My examination of the female banqueters on this psykter investigates gender ideologies in Attic vase painting, but also humor, eroticism and the use of stereotypes in late-archaic Athens. I suggest this image of female banqueters helped male symposiasts bond and reinforced the privileged position of the Athenian male citizen. The similarity of this image to the actual symposium forced the symposiast to reflect on his behavior, while its differenc…
Greek Prostitutes in the Ancient Mediterranean, 800 BCE–200 CE
Prostitutes in the Ancient Mediterranean, 800 BCE 200 CE challenges the often-romanticized view of the prostitute as an urbane and liberated courtesan by examining the social and economic realities of the sex industry in Greco-Roman culture. Departing from the conventional focus on elite society, these essays consider the Greek prostitute as displaced foreigner, slave, and member of an urban underclass. The contributors draw on a wide range of ma…
Cosmetics and Sôphrosunê
This paper considers the section on cosmetics in Xenophon's Oikonomikos (10.1–13) within the context of actual cosmetic use in Greece and the motif of female adornment in Archaic poetry. Rather than being out of place in a treatise on estate management, I argue that the wife's agreement to refrain from cosmetics is central to Ischomachos' presentation of her as a new kind of woman: a manager of the household, rather than a strain upon it. Xenopho…
Sexual Morality in Ancient Rome by Rebecca Langlands
200 PHOENIX Sexual Morality inAncient Rome. By Rebecca Langlands. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. 2006. Pp. vii, 399. Despite its title, Langlands's study ismore accurately an examination pudicitia in the Roman literary tradition. While book-length studies have been done on the near Greek equivalent of sophrosyne and also on aidos, Langlands's book is the first comprehensive study of sexual virtue in the Roman world. Her focus is on the us…
Reading Women
