  • Police and Politics in Marseille, 1936-1945

Simon Kitson•BOOK•Police and Politics in Marseille,…•2014

Simon Kitson's Police and Politics in Marseille, 1936-1945 offers a 'history from below' analysis of the attitude of the Marseille Police between the Popular Front and the Liberation of France. Kitson highlights the specificities of policing France's largest port: clientelism, corruption, a floating population and high levels of criminality, including organised crime. But he also demonstrates why many of his conclusions about Police attitude can …

  • The Devil’s Captain: Ernst Jünger in Nazi Paris, 1941–1944, by Allan Mitchell

    Open Access•Simon Kitson, S K A Kitson•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2013

Allan Mitchell has made his name as a specialist on Franco-German relations, on which he has written many noteworthy tomes, most recently his Nazi Paris: The History of an Occupation, 1940–1944, published in 2008, also by Berghahn. The current volume is presented as a companion volume to that study. Usually, this reviewer is a huge fan of Mitchell’s work. On this occasion, however, I frequently found myself asking whether this slim volume really …

  • The Politics of Everyday Life in Vichy France: Foreigners, Undesirables and Strangers

    Simon Kitson•ARTICLE•French History•2012

Shannon Fogg’s valuable tome is an amended version of a doctoral thesis undertaken under the expert guidance of Sarah Farmer. Fogg offers a ‘bottom up’ approach, exploring how everyday life in the period 1939–1944 affected social attitudes towards groups of outsiders in the Limousin region, in other words the Corrèze, Creuse and Haute-Vienne départements of central France. The author emphasises how the value of specific regions changed as a resul…

  • The Devil's Captain, Ernst Junger in Nazi Paris, 1941-1944

    Simon Kitson, S K A Kitson•ARTICLE•French History•2012

Retired professor Allan Mitchell has a long and distinguished career as a specialist of Franco-German relations, most recently with his impressively succinct and incisive Nazi Paris: The History of an Occupation, 1940–1944, published in 2008 by Berghahn. The Devil’s Captain, Ernst Jünger in Nazi Paris, 1941–1944 is a spin-off from that, and offers his short biographical contribution to the study of the life of this German officer and writer. Barr…

  • Police and Politics in Marseille, 1936-8

    Open Access•Simon Kitson•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2007

This article deals with the relationship between the police and national and local politics in France during the mid-1930s. A new left-wing coalition, the Popular Front, had come to power to try to ward off a perceived fascist threat. This threat was felt very keenly in France because most of the surrounding countries were falling under far right control and France had had its own extreme-right demonstrations in 1934. It was important for the new…

  • From Enthusiasm to Disenchantment: The French Police and the Vichy Regime, 1940–1944

    Open Access•Simon Kitson•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2002•Cited by: 2

The French police during the Second World War were used both as a tool of collaboration between the Vichy regime and the Nazi occupier and to enforce an internal political reform, known as the National Revolution. The police initially responded enthusiastically, since an input of new resources was promised and the regime's main opponents – communists and foreigners – were also traditional police targets. A fierce repression ensued, police actions…

Rapidement cependant, …

Simon Kitson, Conor Kostick•ARTICLE•Vingtième Siècle Revue d histoire•1999•Cited by: 12

The years from the Easter Rising in 1916 to the ending of the Civil War in 1923 were years full of drama and of fast-changing events, whose outcome shaped Irish society for generations. The conventional narrative of this period is one that focuses on the efforts of the nationalist politicians of various hues and the military activities of the IRA in their struggle to escape the British Empire. But these were also years of extraordinary popular in…

The Marseille police force, weakened and unpopular in the aftermath of the nazi occupation which had left a legacy of hatred, appalling living conditions, high crime rates, public order difficulties, concerns over national security and a desire to punish those who had compromised themselves by complicity with the enemy, was faced with considerable difficulties. In this context, forces both within and outside the police conjoined to assure a relat…

    Simon Kitson•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•1997

In the last 20 years, a number of scholarly studies have convincingly shown the responsibility of Vichy in the deportation of Jews from France. This article sets out to explore how this policy was interpreted lower down the administrative ladder. Hierarchical pressure was one of the major limitations on police resistance to this measure, but despite this many police officers were shocked by the reality behind the measures they were being asked to…
