This article presents a comparative study of terrorism in Argentina and Spain, focusing on the regions of Catamarca and Navarre. Through five lines of analysis—the notion of terrorism in each country, the current state of the phenomenon, the role of victims, efforts to construct a restorative narrative, and prospects for future coexistence—it seeks to deepen the understanding of this complex and multifaceted phenomenon. In Argentina, terrorism is…
Violence, Politics and Religion: A Case Study of the Black Panther Party
The majority of US Black social movement organizations during the second half of the twentieth century had explicit ties to either Christian or Islamic religious institutions. The Black Panther Party (BPP) was a notable outlier in its secularism. Through the lens of radicalization, this paper examines the place of violence in the Party's ideological platform and political practice relative to the Party's secularism and experience of state repress…
Violence, Politics and Religion: A General Theory of Violent Radicalization
This book offers a general theory of violent radicalization and uses case studies from a variety of different countries and groups to illustrate this. The first and fundamental objective of the book is to provide an explanatory framework to understand phenomena related to violent radicalization, deradicalization, the prevention of radicalization and to political violence; in particular, that inspired by religion. The second objective follows from…
Understanding Social Phenomena Linked to Religion: In Search of an Alternative Approach That Combines Science with Religious Insights
Some contemporary social phenomena, despite secularization, are still linked to religion. However, this same secularization seems to have accompanied a progressive process of religious illiteracy. Therefore, the capacity to address religious inspired issues is lower than the magnitude of the problems at work, be violent right-wing movement and Islamist terrorism or ethical debates on the beginning and end of life, to name but a few. Hence, this p…
An Attempt at a Theoretical Explanation of Violent Islamist Radicalization in Spain
This paper is the first in a series of papers that aim to address Islamist violent radicalization from different angles: the nature of violent radicalization in the context of Spain; a comparison between European, North American, and Indian violent radicalization; the need to refine territorial radicalization indexes within the context of preventing violent radicalization and the relation between Islamist violent radicalization; and other forms o…
Integrated mineralogical and typological study of Axe-God pendants from the Jade and pre-Columbian Culture Museum in Costa Rica
The mineralogical composition and typological classification of a group of 226 Axe-God pendants from the Jade and pre-Columbian Culture Museum (from the Instituto Nacional de Seguros) in San José (Costa Rica) was studied, using a non-invasive characterization technique and a novel stylistic classification scheme. Possible composition-design correlations were examined through descriptive and functional statistical analysis. This study constitutes …
A Sociological Approach to the Extremist Radicalization in Islam: The Need for Indicators
This paper examines the factors connected with the Islamist radicalization process looking at three categories of indicators – psychological, meso-sociological, and macro-sociological ones –, in order to underline the need for designing early prevention and identification mechanisms. The proposal that these mechanisms should be at the heart of public policies to combat Islamist terrorism within the Spanish territory is one of the underlying assum…
Secularization, Liberalism and the Problematic Role of Religion in Modern Societies
This paper argues that there is a defective understanding of the sociological secularization process and a liberal tradition that takes for granted many problematic notions and subtly determines the logic of the debate on religion in modern societies. While the two issues are not causal factors for the rise of radical right-wing populist movements, they constitute the framework within which the debates on ethno-religious pluralism and its relatio…
