Charitable Giving: How Much, by Whom, to What, and How?
Beyond Altruism
Beyond Altruism: Philanthropy as Moral Biography and Moral Citizenship of Care
In this chapter I address four aspects of the practice of philanthropy in biography and society. I wish to show how philanthropy is a more profound array of biographical and societal relationships than its conventional understanding as an activity that flows in, to, or through organizations formally defined in the legal code as nonprofit charitable organizations. On a personal level I define philanthropy as a moral biography of care. On a societa…
The Boston Area Diary Study and the Moral Citizenship of Care
This paper describes the theoretical foundations, empirical findings, and practical and philosophical implications of the Boston Area Diary Study (BADS), a study of the caring behavior of 44 participants over one calendar year. In particular, the paper presents an identification theory of care and discusses how it shaped the conceptualization, collection, and analysis of the data in a year-long diary study of daily voluntary assistance. The findi…

Social participation and charitable giving: A multivariate analysis
Despite an abundance of survey data on charitable giving, researchers have not analysed these data asking the kinds of theoretical questions and employing the kinds of multivariate statistical techniques that would advance our understanding of the social processes leading to charitable behaviour. This article reports the authors’ first findings from their continuing efforts to develop and test such a multivariate causal model of the social, demog…
Culture and Emotion in Christmas: The Elementary Forms of the Spiritual Life
I think it's the most wonderful time of the year and the most difficult time of the year. I think it is the worst of holidays and I think it's the best of holidays. I really do. I think just because of all the depression and the mental illness and watching people react to it and the fact that people are alone and it's supposed to be this great get‐together‐bonding‐experience. Supposedly here is the light of the world that's gonna make everything …
Explaining the curve in the U-shaped curve
In a previous paper we have demonstrated that for the total population of households, including non-givers, lower income households participate less and donate smaller average percentages of their household incomes than do higher income households. In this paper we inquire about the relative generosity of that sub-population of households that actually donate to charitable causes. We base our analysis on data collected in the 1990 national survey…

Wealth in Western Thought: The Case for and against Riches
The sound of one hand clapping: The case for and against anonymous giving
The paper draws on intensive interviews with 130 millionaires to explore the case for and against anonymous giving, to indicate a number of key findings about anonymous giving among the wealthy, and to describe the potential of anonymous giving to raise both the level of care and control in philanthropic relationships. The first two sections of the paper set out the case for and against anonymous giving, emphasising the instrumental and moral rat…
The dependent variable of the independent sector: The definition and measurement of giving and volunteering
This paper addresses three topics to which researchers should turn their attention in regard to the dependent variable of giving and volunteering. The first is to develop an expanded definition of philanthropy revolving around the notion of ‘gift’ and the relations of exchange and around the theological virtue of charity and the emotional dispositions of care, altruism, and love of neighbour. The second is to attend to measurement problems in reg…

Variations on a Theme: More Uses of Odds Ratios to Interpret Log-Linear Parameters
This article presents an expository discussion of the use of odds, odds ratios, and functions of odds ratios as an aid to the interpretation of log-linear parameters. While there have been some previous presentations on the use of odds ratios, this method has never been fully and systematically developed for complex situations, nor have the potential problems of interpretation using odds ratios been discussed. The presentation in this article mor…

Using Adjusted Crosstabulations to Interpret Log-Linear Relationships
Log-linear analysis was developed as a more powerful technique for the analysis of multivariate tables of categorical variables. It was specifically designed to deal with some of the problems that plagued users of crosstabulations. of the major drawbacks to the traditional crosstabulation approach is the difficulty of controlling for the effects of more than a single other variable. This is often due to small sample sizes within cells of a crosst…
On the Road: Conceptualizing Class Structure in the Transition to Socialism
In recent years researchers addressing issues revolving around the transition to socialism have developed theories transcending the sterile antinomy of Leninist vanguardism and social democratic reformism. The purpose of this article is to explore aspects of class relations and class structure in the transition to socialism from such a nondogmatic perspective. Our thesis is that the noninsurrectionist transition to socialism in advanced capitalis…

Workers' Earnings and Corporate Economic Structure
Workers' Earnings and Corporate Economic Structure investigates the role of economic structure in determining employees' earnings and how workplace organization contributes to social inequality. The study focuses on the characteristics of the organization of capital rather than on different management styles or systems.
