  • The Political Economy of Modern Monetary Theory

    Open Access•Nikos Pontis, Stavros Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2026

Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) has emerged as a significant heterodox challenge to neoclassical orthodoxy, arguing that sovereign currency-issuing governments face no intrinsic financial constraints and can use fiscal policy to achieve full employment. MMT offers important critiques of austerity and captures genuine operational realities of contemporary monetary systems. A systematic theoretical examination of its foundations, analytical coherence,…

  • The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic upon employment and inequality in the Mediterranean EU

Open Access•Andrew Herod, Stelios Giali et al.•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 7

COVID-19 is a global pandemic but has a particular geography to it, differentially affecting people and places. Here we explore its impact upon labour markets in the Mediterranean European Union (EU) countries. Our analysis is part of a collective work-in-progress monitoring the pandemic’s effects upon workers since early March 2020. First we note that there is a geographical political economy to pandemics. We then scrutinise the current pandemic…

  • Work Intensity and Value Formation

    Open Access•Alexis Ioannides, Stavros Mavroudea et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2021•References: 2

  • The Economic and Political Consequences of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2020•Cited by: 1

The COVID-19 epidemic has triggered a twin (health and economic crisis). The first is caused by the "metabolic rift" (capitalism's uncontrollable and insatiable commodification of nature) that leads to the modern "emerging epidemics" of zoonoses. The economic crisis was already simmering but lockdowns triggered and aggravated its eruption. Furthermore, it argues that socialism is better equipped to confront health crises due to its superior state…

  • A Passionate and Patient Contribution to Revolutionary Theory and Politics

    Open Access•Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2017

  • Virtual Water

Stelios Giali, Stavros Mavroudea et al.•ARTICLE•Capitalism Nature Socialism•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Water is a fundamental resource for the reproduction of humankind and should be treated in a sustainable manner. However, capitalism has a propensity for devouring water and other natural resources

  • Duration, Intensity and Productivity of Labour and the Distinction between Absolute and Relative Surplus-value

Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros Mavroudeas et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Marx recognized two distinct but also interrelated processes of increasing surplus-value extraction: absolute and relative surplus-value. Both these processes hinge upon the duration, the intensity and the productivity of labour, albeit in different ways. The increase of the duration of labour is indisputably related to absolute surplus-value and the increase of labour productivity to relative surplus-value. However, there is controversy regardin…

  • Work More or Work Harder? The Duration and Intensity of Work in Marx's Capital

    Open Access•Alexis Ioannides, Stavros Mavroudea et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 4

The relationship between the duration of work (working time) and its intensity is a rather neglected issue in economic theory, both neoclassical and heterodox. Marx's analysis of this subject remains highly original and accurate. Furthermore, a dissenting minority of neoclassical labor economists have — consciously or unconsciously — followed his theses. The main points of the Marxian analysis are: a) the existence of an inverse relationship betw…

  • Grossmann, Kalecki, and the Theory of Crisis

    Open Access•Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros Mavroudeas et al.•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2006•References: 3

  • Regulation Theory

    Open Access•Stavros Mavroudea, Stavros Mavroudeas•ARTICLE•Science & Society•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Regulation Theory aims, on a historicist and insti-tutionalist basis and via a middle-range methodology, to explain capitalist development. However, both its theoretical and meth-odological perspectives are unfit for this purpose. Middle-range methodology prioritizes superficial features of reality, fails to implement dialectical abstraction and, consequently, fails to grasp either the deeper roots or the actual course of historical evolution. Re…
