The Emerging Global Tobacco Treatment Workforce
Tobacco use is projected to kill 1 billion people in the 21st century. Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD) is one of the most common substance use disorders in the world. Evidence-based treatment of TUD is effective, but treatment accessibility remains very low. A dearth of specially trained clinicians is a significant barrier to treatment accessibility, even within systems of care that implement brief intervention models. The treatment of TUD is becoming…
The Influence of Friends on Teen Vaping
Vaping is popular among adolescents. Previous research has explored sources of information and influence on youth vaping, including marketing, ads, family, peers, social media, and the internet. This research endeavors to expand understanding of peer influence. Our hypothesis is that friends' influence on teen vapers' first electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use varies by demographic variables and awareness of ENDS advertising. In August…
Perceptions of electronic cigarettes among ethno-culturally diverse Latino adults in four US urban centers
Overall, Latino adults knew relatively little about the potential health risks associated with e-cigarette use. The limited knowledge about and misinformation of e-cigarettes among this rapidly growing minority group have important public health implications. Findings may inform culturally tailored health communication campaigns, which are much needed among underserved US Latino populations in light of low effectiveness of tobacco control and reg…
Blue space as caring space - water and the cultivation of care in social and environmental practice
This paper studies three sites or ‘landscapes of care’ in Leeds, Bristol and London where water and associated built and natural environments are used to co-construct and facilitate forms of social and environmental care. Our research narrates the ways in which blue spaces are cultivated for the production of particular forms of caring bodies and sensibilities. Interpreting care as both a doing (caring for) and emotion (caring about), we draw att…
Enrollee Characteristics in an Intensive Tobacco Dependence Treatment Program
Intensive tobacco treatment programs offer many advantages relative to other treatment options, particularly for more complex patients, e.g., highly nicotine dependent, or those with medical and psychiatric symptoms and disorders. Efforts to better understand those who choose to enroll in these programs, particularly regarding the characteristics they possess known to mediate outcomes, are important considerations in tailoring available services.…
Retooling the ILO
Raising global labor standards has been a goal of labor activists, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and nations for over a century. The International Labor Organization (ILO) was created nearly one hundred years ago for that purpose, but a century later its goal remains largely unfinished. This paper will propose a retooling initiative for the ILO that will give it the enforcement power it needs for real labor standard change and the resourc…
Relationship between Personality Traits and Nicotine Dependence in Male and Female Smokers of African-American and European-American Samples
There exist differential relationships between personality traits and the severity of ND in the AA and EA samples
Prevalence of Cigarette Smoking and Nicotine Dependence in Men and Women Residing in Two Provinces in China
These data not only show a high smoking prevalence in Chinese men but also reveal that a relatively large number of smokers are H-ND. Considering that few Chinese smokers seek ND treatment, a comprehensive smoking prevention and treatment program designed specifically for Chinese is greatly needed
Perceived discrimination is associated with health behaviours among African-Americans in the Jackson Heart Study
Higher levels of perceived discrimination were associated with select health behaviours among men and women. Health behaviours offer a potential mechanism through which perceived discrimination affects health in AA
Evaluation of the Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives in African-American and European-American Heavy Smokers
The Brief WISDM demonstrated reasonable psychometric properties in our large sample. Together, we provide support for the general validity of the brief form but suggest individual item selections may benefit from further investigation
Psychometric Evaluation of the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List-Short Form in the Aric Study Cohort
The impact of social support on health outcomes is well documented. The current study evaluated a short form of the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL-SF) administered to 14,257 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study. Using confirmatory factor analysis, we attempted to replicate the subscale structure of the full-scale version. Additional analyses were conducted to examine the relationship of ISEL scores to key dem…
Tobacco Cessation via Public Dental Clinics
Objectives. We sought to compare the effectiveness of a dental practitioner advice and brief counseling intervention to quit tobacco use versus usual care for patients in community health centers on tobacco cessation, reduction in tobacco use, number of quit attempts, and change in readiness to quit. Methods. We randomized 14 federally funded community health center dental clinics that serve diverse racial/ethnic groups in 3 states (Mississippi, …
Psychometric Evaluation of a Coping Strategies Inventory Short-Form (CSI-SF) in the Jackson Heart Study Cohort
This study sought to establish the psychometric properties of a Coping Strategies Inventory Short Form (CSISF) by examining coping skills in the Jackson Heart Study cohort. We used exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, Pearson's correlation, and Cronbach Alpha to examine reliability and validity in the CSI-SF that solicited responses from 5302 African American men and women between the ages of 35 and 84. One item was dropped from the 16-i…
The 5A’s vs 3A’s plus proactive quitline referral in private practice dental offices
These results suggest that there are both advantages and disadvantages to the use of quitlines as an adjunct to brief counselling provided by dental practitioners. Patients receiving quitline counselling quit at higher rates than those who did not; however, only a small percentage of patients received counselling from the quitline. Therefore, it appears that dental professionals may be most effective in helping their patients to quit by regularly…
Treatment of a 15‐year‐old girl with chronic muscle‐contraction headache using implosive therapy
A 15‐year‐old girl with chronic muscle‐contraction headache was treated initially using a behaviourally based headache programme. Little change in headache activity resulted. Implosive therapy was incorporated into treatment after the girl revealed a past episode of sexual abuse. A substantial reduction in headache activity was noted at post‐treatment and follow‐up
