The L Word ’s Afterlives
This essay examines the afterlives of The L Word and their implications for “diverse” TV. We begin with The L Word ’s project of diversifying the representation of sexual orientation, which, we argue, is driven by a policy-tainment ethos consistent with deep, networked characterization. Then, turning to The L Word ’s most successful digital chronicler and interlocutor Autostraddle , we argue that the site inaugurated a shift to diversity-, rather…
Blowjobs with teeth
This article traces the development of the heterosexual blowjob as a symbol of the sex-critical thesis. I argue that the politics of this symbolism-as well as the materiality that sex-radicals used to combat it-is grounded in a Lockean concept of the rights bearing citizen, the Human, as inalienably in possession of a body and consent as the imprimatur of its contracts. These feminist investments in self-possession appropriate the abject position…

Public Utilities and Public Corporations
It would be difficult to over-emphasise the importance of Britain’s commercial and financial relationships with Uruguay as a formative influence on the economic structure of the country. Few other nations were absorbed so completely into Britain’s informal empire in the nineteenth century. Indeed, it was British mediation at a critical stage in relations between Brazil and Argentina which promoted independence for Uruguay in 1828. Although Britai…

Latin-American Development
A reviewer confronted with fourteen new books on the Latin-American economy inevitably seeks a common theme on which to hang his remarks, in the hope that this will make sense of his labours. Let it be confessed immediately that diligent search has failed to reveal any such unity in these volumes. Indeed, on the safe assumption that they represent a random selection from the rapidly growing literature on the subject, they might almost be taken as…

Three Perspectives on the Crisis in Uruguay
Recent explanations of the crisis in Uruguay have tended to focus either on the inadequacies of economic policy in the 1950s, or on the financial and moral implications of the social legislation of Uruguay. This article puts forward an alternative interpretation of the crisis, finding the fundamental causes of it in the manner in which modernizing forces were reconciled to traditional structures in the early decades of this century. The first sec…
