  • Party Politics in Post-communist Russia

    John Lowenhardt•BOOK•Party Politics in Post-Communist…•2013

Political parties are the fabric of democratic politics. In 1991 a new Russia emerged after seven decades of one-party dictatorship, claiming to be on the road towards democracy. In this volume the authors analyse the many contradictions, dilemmas, and paradoxes of reconstituting free party politics and democratic rule in a severely traumatized country. Frequently from a comparative perspective they deal with a range of topics, from the behaviour…

In the discussion that follows we focus upon this wider public dimension of the process of eastward enlargement, and upon the distribution of opinion within our four countries on the place they occupy within a changing international order. Do ordinary citizens in these countries, for instance, think of themselves as 'Europeans'? Or as members of a distinctive civilisation, sharing some but not all of the values of their Western counterparts? More…

    Open Access•John Lowenhardt, Ronald J Hill et al.•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2001•Citada por: 1

The expansion of NATO and the enlargement of the EU will produce outside states in which perceptions and policies will be influenced by feelings of exclusion and isolation. Building on an earlier article published in International Affairs (January 2000) on Russia and Ukraine, this article analyses two countries ‘inbetween’ in which these feelings are particularly strong. Belarus and Moldova, two classic borderlands, are small, new states with bor…

  • The village votes

John Lowenhardt, Ruben Verheul•ARTICLE•Journal of Communist Studies•2000•Referências: 1

The Russian parliamentary elections of December 1999 were conducted with varying degrees of democratic reliability in different parts of Russia. In Tatarstan, with its own constitution and electoral regulations that differ substantially from those of the Russian Federation, the elections were conducted with less than complete adherence to the principles of democratic procedure. In particular, a range of features of the old Soviet‐style electoral …

The expansion of NATO and the enlargement of the EU will produce outside states in which perceptions and policies will be influenced by feelings of exclusion and isolation. Russia and Ukraine are two important examples. In Russia the sense of exclusion results from NATO expansion and it was exacerbated by the air strikes against Serbia. Although Ukraine also responded negatively to NATO's attack on Serbia, Ukrainian perceptions of exclusion are c…

WHILE GORBACHEV'S REFORMS HAVE HAD A BROAD IMPACT ON Soviet society, one key element in the communist system of rule has been particularly affected: the nomenklatura. The word refers to lists of positions for which party committees traditionally held responsibility in recruitment, and lists of persons deemed suitable to fill them. In general, appointments to such posts could not be made without the sanction of the relevant party committee. In som…

In Soviet foreign policy, the Low Countries—Belgium and the Netherlands—seem to occupy a position symbolized by their name. Yet, in the past decade, Soviet diplomacy has scored a number of successes: by 1985 the cohesion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization seemed threatened by the recurrent non-decision-making of Belgian and Dutch governments on the issue of intermediate-range nuclear forces; in Belgium the Soviets have succeeded in establi…
