Reconstructing Bronze Age dietary habits utilising stable isotope analysis at Kültepe, central Türkiye
A stable isotopic and textual examination of the weaning process at Bronze Age Kültepe, Türkiye
Testing the guidelines of the New Coimbra Method for recording entheseal changes via interobserver agreement in a Bronze Age skeletal sample from Kültepe-Kanesh, Türkiye
The New Coimbra Method is the most recently proposed standardized method to assess entheseal changes (EC). However, the method's developers acknowledge the inadequacy of their guidelines and state that those who will use the method need in-person training from them. This study aims to determine the applicability of the method's guideline by testing the interobserver agreement (IOA) with observers who were not trained by the developers. The second…
Bread and Class in Medieval Society
Bread was a basic food staple as well as a marker of status in medieval societies. A study of Byzantine and Islamic textual sources combined with an archaeological scientific study of teeth remains from four excavated sites in modern Turkey demonstrates that literary stereotypes about access to high-quality bread may have held in densely populated urban settlements but not in society on a wider scale. Peasants, the lowest social group, also had a…
Continuity and change in cereal grinding technology at Kültepe, Turkey
Change in Mediterranean grinding technology during the Hellenistic/Roman period affected the pattern of dental microwear since external grit particles were finer when flour was prepared using large rotary querns. Therefore, it is possible to detect the technological change through the analysis of human dentition. Here, the sample of teeth from Kültepe (ancient Kanesh), Turkey, is investigated to determine if the grinding technology changed at thi…
Geneti̇k, Çevresel Ve Kültürel Etmenleri̇n Işiğinda Anemi̇
In this study, genetic, environmental, and cultural factors of anemia are considered in the light of recent approaches in paleopathology. Porotic hyperostosis (PH) and cribra orbitalia (CO) are pathologic conditions which are seen in the form of porotic appearance on the cranial vault and orbital roofs. These conditions are described as consequences of marrow hyperplasia due to genetic or acquired chronic childhood anemia. Genetic anemias, such …
A possible case of Scheuermann's disease from Akarçay Höyük, Birecik (Şanlıurfa, Turkey)
During excavations in Akarçay Höyük, located in Birecik (Şanlıurfa, Turkey), a human and a horse skeleton were found together as a co-burial. This burial was in an Islamic cemetery dated to 13th-14th century AD. The human skeleton was that of a young adult female with a distinct thoracic kyphosis. Three adjacent thoracic vertebral bodies, T4, T5 and T6, were wedge shaped and this wedging was also apparent in radiographs. There were Schmorl's node…
Schmorl's nodes in a post-medieval skeletal sample from Klostermarienberg, Austria
The prevalence and distribution pattern of Schmorl's nodes (SNs) were studied in a post-medieval skeletal sample (n = 473) from the 16th-18thcentury cemetery of Klostermarienberg, Austria. The reasons for the prevalence and distribution pattern of SNs in this sample are discussed with regard to their aetiology. SNs were correlated with age and sex as well as with degenerative spinal joint disease such as vertebral osteophytosis (VO) and apophysea…
