  • The Composition of Aristotle's Athenaion Politeia: Observation and Explanation

    Stephen J Simon, John J Keaney•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•1994•Cited by: 2

Aristotle's Athenaion Politeia was discovered one hundred years ago and has since been treated as an historical document of ancient history. Some have believed that the work is so poor as history that it must have been the product of a mind inferior to Aristotle's. The 'historical' approach has dominated and there has been no literary analysis of the work since Kaibel's 1893 work. Keaney starts from the belief that the Athenaion Politeia does not…

  • Observation and Explanation

    John J Keaney•CHAPTER•The composition of Aristotle's…•1992

This part of my title perhaps itself deserves explanation. I think of a double process. Its first part consists of drawing attention to smaller or larger portions of the text about which it is desirable to ask further questions. Although few of these passages have in the past been singled out for special treatment, it will, I hope, become clear that one basic principle of interpretation can be applied to them, namely that to look at them only in …

  • Plato, Apology 32 c 8-d 3

    Open Access•John J Keaney•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•1980

Whether Meletus, the accuser of Socrates, is to be identified with Meletus, the accuser of Andocides and participant in the arrest of Leon of Salamis (And. 1.94), has recently been discussed, with inconclusive results, by H. Blumenthal. The strongest argument against the identification, it may be thought, is that Socrates mentions the arrest (32 c 4-e 1) without implicating Meletus. I propose to argue that the Meleti are one, that there is a veil…
