  • Powdermaker's Lesu

    Abraham Rosman, Paula G Rubel•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•1991•Cited by: 5•References: 1

Powdermaker's study of Lesu was done while she was a student of Malinowski's at the London School of Economics. As such, it reflects the strengths and weaknesses of the functionalist approach. Powdermaker's ethnographic description of Lesu treats it as though it was a bounded society unrelated to a wider context. We examine Powdermaker's Lesu from the theoretical perspective of anthropology today, as a village within a region having a particular …

    Open Access•Abraham Rosman, Paula G Rubel•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1972•Cited by: 6•References: 9

Significant variations are shown to be present in the potlatch in two Northwest Coast societies. Differences occur in occasions for potlatches, in frequency, in guests present, and in the nature of their relationship to the host. These variations are related to variations in the social structures of the societies. The Tlingit and the Kwakiutl are selected for comparison, using an approach which involves the building of models based upon a rule of…

The following is a report of a pilot study on nomad-sedentary relations viewed in terms of exchange. The study was conducted in the Zagros Mountains of Iran and in the central Hazarajat of Afghanistan during the summer of 1971. The research involved the application in a field situation of a theoretical framework that links exchange and social structure. In previous research we had investigated the relationship between social structure and exchang…
