Developmental variation in facial forms in Japan
Significant differences in facial form between the Jomon and the post-Jomon series of the Yayoi, Medieval, and Early Modern period have been interpreted in terms of the gene flow from the Asian continent or the reduction of masticatory stress through the Jomon to the Early Modern period. However, the developmental process that produced these differences in facial form between the two groups has remains unknown. In this study we examined the facto…

Ritual Tooth Extraction in the Human Skeletal Remains Stored in the National Taiwan University
Anthropological Study of the Transition from the Jomon to the Yayoi Periods in the Northern Kyushu Using Morphological and Paleodemographical Features (2)

Anthropological study of the transition from the Jomon to the Yayoi Periods in northern Kyushu using morphological and paleodemographical features
Northern Kyushu, the area of Japan located closest to the Korean Peninsula, has been considerably influenced by foreign culture and immigrants from the Asian mainland in the past. Numerous morphological studies of human skeletal remains from the Jomon and Yayoi Periods in this region have shown that a variety of physical characteristics of the Yayoi are greatly different from those of the Jomon. The observed physical differences between the Jomon…
A Comparative Study of Ritual Tooth Ablation in Ancient China and Japan
This paper comparatively examines ritual tooth ablation in ancient China and Japan. In China, as far as it is known at present, ritual tooth ablation first appeared among the people of the Shandong-North Jiangsu region, at least 6500 years ago, and then became very popular amongst the people of the Dawenkou culture of coastal China. In Japan, on the other hand, this custom was performed extensively among the people of the Late-Final Jomon period.…
Temporal craniometric changes from the Jomon to the Modern period in western Japan
Temporal changes in morphometric features of human cranial remains from the late Jomon period (1500 B.C.–300 B.C.) to the Modern period (1900–1950 A.D.) in western Japan are examined. The results of univariate and multivariate analysis indicate that the Yayoi people (300 B.C.–300 A.D.), characterized by high faces and tall stature, show morphological discontinuity with the earlier Jomon people, who exhibit lower faces and shorter stature. This di…
Ritual tooth-ablation in Doigahama Yayoi people
Human Skeletal Remains of the Edo Period Excavated from the Tenpukuji Site, Fukuoka
Human skeletal remains from the late-Edo period (18-19c.) were excavated from Tenpukuji site, Fukuoka city in 1983-1984. In northern Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture, from which many important human skeletal remains have been found, the Tenpukuji materials are to date the only remains of Edo-era. Of the 200 human skeletons excavated at this site, 38 well preserved materials in each sex were selected for study. In a comparative analysis of the mate…
Sex Assessment of Fragmentary Skeletal Remains
To determine the sex of fragmentary human skeletal remains, discriminant function analysis using 18 measurements on relatively preservable parts of the skeleton was made on samples from western Japan, of recent, medieval and aeneolithic Yayoi periods. A total of over 150 discriminant functions based on one to eight variables were applied to recent samples and the sex could be determined with over 90% accuracy, using combinations of only two to th…
