  • Explicating the conception of political obligation embedded in Martin Heidegger’s early treatises

William James Wallace, Jim Jose•ARTICLE•Comparative and Continental…•2024

The concept of political obligation has not attracted much attention within Heideggerian scholarship. In this paper, we identify and explicate Heidegger’s conception of political obligation embedded in his pre-Kehre works. It will be argued that Heidegger’s magnum opus Being and Time and his address as Rector of Freiburg contain a latent associative account of political obligation. We argue that the ontological framework disclosed in Being and Ti…

Adam L. Tate’s Catholics’ Lost Cause: South Carolina Catholics and the American South, 1820–1861 is a worthy contribution to the already bulky field of American religious history. While some of Tate’s themes will be familiar to experts, the book contains rich content and unveils textured episodes that will interest a cross-section of scholars. Historians of American religion, South Carolina, antebellum politics, and the early nineteenth-century A…

  • How frank was Franks

William James Wallace, William Wallace•ARTICLE•International Affairs•1983

The Franks Report is an extraordinary document. On a rapid first reading-all that was possible in the immediate debate which followed its publication in January 1983-it exonerates the government in office from all blame. A more leisured re-reading, some months later, provides a very different perspective. The report's often-quoted conclusion (para. 339) that '. . . we would not be justified in attaching any criticism or blame to the present gover…
