Robust Nonnested Testing and the Demand for Money
Nonnested hypothesis testing procedures recently have been extended to dynamic nonnested models. We propose robust tests that generalize the J test and the F test for nonnested dynamic models with unknown serial correlation and conditional heteroscedasticity in errors and regressors. We investigate the finite-sample properties of our test statistics and propose to use bootstrap methods or the fixed-b asymptotics developed by Kiefer and Vogelsang …
Bayesian Analysis of the Prototypal Search Model
Bayesian analysis for a simple but widely applied dynamic programming model is obtained. The setting is the prototypal job-search model. The general case of wage and duration data, with potential censoring, is studied. The optimality condition implied by the dynamic programming setup is fully imposed. The posterior distribution reveals a “ridge” reflecting the characteristic nonstandard nature of the inference problem. Marginal distributions and …
Menu Pricing: An Experimental Approach
Menu-pricing schemes in restaurants are often based primarily on markup-over-cost methods. More sophisticated techniques make use of ideas about consumer demand as well as cost. We propose an experiment for determining the effect of price on the quantity demanded of a menu item. We ran the experiment in a restaurant. The technique is clearly feasible. In our case, the demand was found to be quite inelastic over the price range considered, indicat…
Empirical Labor Economics: The Search Approach
This book is suitable for graduates taking courses in labour economics which use a search approach. The economics of search has become a part of the standard graduate curriculum and deals with the costs and benefits to individual workers - either employed or unemployed - of seeking a job with the highest possible pay. This book surveys the empirical literature on the economics of search in a systematic manner

How Long Is a Spell of Unemployment? Illusions and Biases in the Use of CPS Data
Most data used to study the durations of unemployment spells come from the Current Population Survey, which is a point-in-time survey and gives an incomplete picture of the underlying duration distribution

An Empirical Job-Search Model, with a Test of the Constant Reservation-Wage Hypothesis
This paper provides an empirically tractable version of a job-search model. The model is estimated using data on a sample of workers who were laid off when their plants closed. A generalization of the empirical model which allows for reservation wages to change over duration of unemployment is provided and estimated. Reservation wages are found to decline significantly with duration. Applications of the model and the estimates to explain diverse …
Population Heterogeneity and Inference from Panel Data on the Effects of Vocational Education
This paper considers a model of earnings over time which incorporates individual effects and time effects without assuming that these effects are orthogonal to the variable of primary interest. The central coefficient is the effect of participation in a Manpower Development and Training Act training program on the earnings of trainees. Since the training status of (some) individuals in the sample changes during the period of the sample, both pre-…
