  • Food transfers in wild and reintroduced golden lion tamarins,Leontopithecus rosalia

    Open Access•Carlos R Ruiz‐Miranda, Carlos R Ruiz-Miranda et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1999

We collected data from wild and reintroduced golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) to describe the behavior of donor and recipient during food transfers, evaluate the effect of supplemental feeding on food transfer behavior, and examine various hypotheses concerning the function of food transfers in primates. Behavioral observations were conducted on 12 groups of tamarins with young (N = 30) between the ages of 1 week and 1 year old. Resu…

  • The Biology and Evolution of Language

    Benjamin B Beck, Ben Beck•REVIEW•Man•1985

This book synthesizes much of the exciting recent research in the biology of language. Drawing on data from anatomy, neurophysiology, physiology, and behavioral biology, Lieberman develops a new approach to the puzzle of language, arguing that it is the result of many evolutionary compromises. Within his discussion, Lieberman skillfully addresses matters as various as the theory of neoteny (which he refutes), the mating calls of bullfrogs, ape la…

  • The birth of a lowland gorilla in captivity

    Open Access•Benjamin B Beck, Ben Beck•ARTICLE•Primates•1984

  • Fertility in North American male lowland gorillas

    Open Access•Benjamin B Beck, Ben Beck•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1982

There are relatively few gorilla births in North America each year, and the birthrate shows considerable fluctuation. A questionnaire returned by 48 of 52 North American zoos and biomedical institutions known to keep gorillas revealed that only 21% of the adult males sired offspring in 1978 and 1979. The viability and genetic diversity of the captive North American population is therefore threatened. Many males are organically sterile, and there …

  • Observation learning of tool use by captive Guinea baboons ( Papio papio )

    Open Access•Benjamin B Beck, Ben Beck•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1973•Cited by: 2•References: 9

A subadult male from a captive group of Guinea baboons learned, by trial‐and‐error, to use a tool to rake in food. He then used the tool 104 times over 26 days, thereby providing the group with most of its food. No other group member used the tool during this period. The tool user was removed, and the remainder of the group was given access to the display. None imitated his tool use. It took longer for another finally to learn to use the tool tha…
