What Is the 'Extra' in Extra Care Housing
The article discusses key findings from a multidisciplinary study of ten remodelled extra care schemes for older people. It argues that the absence of a clear national definition of ‘extra care’ makes it difficult for older people, their relatives and social workers to dicide whether an extra case scheme is appropriate. Schemes were idiosyncratic. Only a minority provided an optional communal cooked lunch. A common problem was high care staff tur…

This Special Issue of Housing Studies is based upon a major recent evaluation of English housing policy 1975–2000. Wide ranging reviews, of housing policy are a significant feature of policy making in many countries. In England a major review carried out in 1977 was intended to provide a comprehensive basis for the future. In this article the 1977 national housing policy review is considered and conclusions are offered about the lessons to be learned from it on the form of such reviews and the importance of monitoring
