Voice quality and tone as independent dimensions of contrast in Dinka
Languages with independently contrastive Voice Quality and Tone are rare, and the evidence base on them is limited. As a result, key hypotheses on how their phonetic realizations interact with one another and with the vowel system remain tentative. Against the background of this evidence base, it is worthwhile to conduct a production study in which Voice Quality, Tone, and Vowel Quality are orthogonally crossed. This paper presents the results of…
Dialectal tone description enhances historical tonology
This paper illustrates that in-depth descriptive work of closely related varieties of Dinka, a Nilotic tone language with an unusually complex suprasegmental system, provides solutions to previously unanswered questions about historical tone change. Using data from six dialects, I show the directions and mechanisms of tone splits and mergers. In-depth descriptive work combined with comparison allows innovation and novel discoveries from both sync…
Heritage Tone and Effects of the Obligatory Contour Principle
This paper reports on a case study of differences in contextual tonal processes between a mother (native speaker) and adult son (heritage speaker) who speak the Ngok dialect of Dinka. Dinka (Nilotic, South Sudan) is known for its highly complex suprasegmental system. Tone has a high functional load in the language, and one of the primary ways in which varieties of Dinka are differentiated is via the tone systems. I show that lexical tone appears …
Analogical change in Dinka vowel alternations
Verbs in Dinka (West Nilotic, Nilo-Saharan) are largely monosyllabic, but nonetheless the language displays a rich inventory of inflectional and derivational forms realized through alternations of the stem vowel with a morphomic distribution. The inflectional paradigm is driven by two complementary alternations which Andersen (1993, 2017) characterizes in phonological terms: fronting, which changes a stem vowel /a/ to /ɛ/, and lowering, which low…
On the nature of adjectives: Evidence from Dinka
This paper presents a description of the adjective class in Dinka, and an exploration of its typological relevance to the existence of adjectives cross-linguistically. In Dinka, a subset of intransitive verbs can be defined by two morphophonological characteristics. The overwhelming majority of these are property concepts, despite the fact that the defining characteristics are unrelated to semantic properties. This calls into question whether or …
On the systematic nature of Dinka noun number morphology
We present an analysis of noun number marking in Dinka, based on Andersen’s system of vowel grades and a new system of tone classes. Assuming that the ‘unmarked’ grade 1 form can be either singular or plural, we show that the morphology is more systematic than has been previously suggested. Roughly half of our dataset can be treated as synchronically regular, and in more than half the remainder the only exceptional features are simple alternation…
Rational Training: A New Method of Facilitating Management and Labor Relations
Rational training is a method of teaching basic principles of interpersonal relations to groups of individuals and is particularly applicable to all levels of management in business and industry, to labor officials, to military personnel, and to others who work in the area of “people contact.” It differs significantly from sensitivity training, group psychoanalysis, and conventional management training courses. It specifically shows members of th…
