Les voies multiples du développement en Asie
Here we discuss the existence of an Asian development path, the role of states in development, that of businesses, that of the money market and the banking system, integration into the world trading system and the question of the cultural model. , as well as that of the imperatives of sustainable development. Can we consider that there is an Asian development path? What is the relevance of the Japanese 'geese in flight' development model defined …

Transfer of Information within Organizations – First Results
A first overview on the usefulness of systems of information transfer for business history is provided, taking into account the contributions of this volume as well as others. The confrontation of empirical information and theory was useful to a certain extent, while it showed little progress in a couple of other cases. Within such systems of information transfer, trust, author and cultural knowledge play a significant role, which helps explain m…
Informationsfluss in Organisationen. Theorien zum Informationstransfer und historische Praxis
The transfer of information is a key function of any organization. Whether reflected and designed or not, systems emerge for this transfer. Like the nervous system of the human body, an information system is vital to any organization. How these systems function is of great importance. Well functioning systems are linked to success while a malfunction may lead to decline or even disaster. Though the relevance of information systems was not questio…
Communication Theory in Business History
Several theories on communication are tested on trial to what extent they can provide additional insight in business history. All are focused on one known example, the relation between the dyestuff cartel and its Japanese competitors in the interwar period. Can theory extend the limits of our knowledge even in well known cases? While the classification of types of information transfer according to Chun Wei Choo provides only limited new insights,…

Cartels Revisited
Easy prey? Firms based in small nations and international cartels, 1919–1939
It is taken as common sense that small countries have been more pressed and exploited by transnational enterprises than large ones. Economists call this the ‘small-country-squeeze’. Our contribution tries to transfer the thesis to the micro-economic level: Did mighty international cartels exploit their cartel partners based in small countries more easily than enterprises from larger states? From a viewpoint of political logic, or everyday feeling…
Kartelle als Kriseninstrumente in Europa nach 1970. Das Beispiel des europäischen Chemiefaserkartells
This article looks into the useof legal cartels in certain branches of industriesduring structural crises, exceptionally acknowledged by the European Commission. From the government’s point of view the advantage of such a crisis-cartel is that non state-money is invested, in order to save a branch of industry. The advantage for industry is a lower level of government interference, compared to state-aid and other schemes. The article explores the …
Regulating and deregulating the public utilities 1830–2010
History can provide invaluable insights into important issues of the economic and social regulation of utilities, and offer lessons towards future debates. But the history of utility regulation – which speaks of changing, diverse and complex experiences around the world – was, unfortunately, sidelined or marginalised when economists and policymakers enthusiastically embraced the question of how to reform the utilities from the 1970s. This paper p…

Economic culture and its transfer
Americanisation is the (selected and adapted) transfer of values from the US to Europe. While this model is well established in cultural history, economist and economic historians had difficulties with this concept. However, the book's title ‘Culture Matters!’ is the latest insight of distinguished economists such as Michael E. Porter, Jeffrey Sachs, Francis Fukuyama and others.1 1. The book Culture Matters. How Values Shape Human Progress was ed…
The Americanisation of distribution and its limits
The change in European distribution systems, exemplified by West Germany, represented a general change from a more cooperative towards a more competitive way of thinking and behaviour in everyday life. Substantial parts of the change towards a more competitive, more dynamic approach can be understood as Americanisation, an adapted and always selective process. Besides, in self-service we find Americanisation in supermarkets. These were no longer …

Economic Culture and its Transfer
Strategic R&D as an answer to the oil crisis. West and east German investment in coal refinement and the chemical industries, 1970–1990
In reaction to the oil‐price shocks of 1973/4 and 1978/9 both of the German states reconsidered coal refinement as a technological answer to economic and political constraints. In the GDR the chemical industry in particular could not do without this technology, but the state did not undertake a major R&D programme, preferring rather to continue with existing plants and processes. The disastrous consequences of this policy were felt when the Sovie…

Risk and Control in Multinational Enterprise
In the following essay, Dr. Schröter examines a specific case, German multinational activity in Scandinavia between the wars, and uses that information to raise more general questions about the nature of multinational enterprise. Before 1914, patterns of German foreign direct investment resembled those of the nation's competitors. After the First World War, however, having lost almost all their overseas holdings and suffering from a severe shorta…

The German Question, the Unification of Europe, and the European Market Strategies of Germany's Chemical and Electrical Industries, 1900–1992
Recent events in Europe have given rise to renewed speculation about the possible economic threat of a resurgent united Germany. This article examines six leading German firms in the electrical and chemical industries over the course of the twentieth century in an attempt to understand the historical realities of the foreign market strategies of Germany's largest firms. Advertising in West Germany after World War II. A Case of an Americanization
