Every five years, the Seventh-day Adventist Church-one of the world's fastest growing denominations, which by 2020 is projected to have up to 40 million adherents and regular attendees worldwide-holds a weeklong series of meetings in which elected officials and other delegates gather to discuss and vote on matters of church policy, governance, mission, and doctrine. These General Conference sessions have come to feature not only regular business p…

  • Does “Religious Violence” Exist: An Argument Against Essentialism with Particular Reference to the Conquest of the Americas

    Open Access•Ronald E Osborn•ARTICLE•Politics and Religion•2014•References: 11

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, there has been a dramatic increase in social scientific literature on the topic of “religious violence,” much of it arguing that there is a uniquely intense and disturbing connection between religion and political conflict and bloodshed. In this article, I challenge mainstream accounts of “religious violence” with an illustrative example from the 16th century of the theoretical and empirical prob…

  • Noam Chomsky and the realist tradition

    Open Access•Ronald E Osborn, Ronald Osborn•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2009•Cited by: 10

This article examines the assumptions that underlie Noam Chomsky's politics and argues that his analysis of US foreign policy since World War II may best be situated within the realist tradition in international relations. Chomsky's left realism has not been adequately understood or addressed by IR scholars for both political and disciplinary reasons. In opposition to most classical realists, he has insisted that intellectuals should resist rathe…

  • William Lloyd Garrison and the United States Constitution: The Political Evolution of an American Radical

Open Access•Ronald E Osborn, Ronald Osborn•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Religion•2008

On August 6, 1824, William Lloyd Garrison, not yet twenty years old, penned a letter to the Salem Gazette opposing John Quincy Adams's bid for the presidency and endorsing the candidacy of a dedicated Georgian, United States Senator William Crawford. There is no mention in the document of the slavery issue and no hint that the young Garrison viewed the Constitution as anything less than a triumph of the founding fathers. The “high and exalted cha…

  • On the Path of Perpetual Revolution: From Marx’s Millenarianism to Sendero Luminoso

    Ronald E Osborn, Ronald Osborn•ARTICLE•Totalitarian Movements &…•2007

Karl Marx’s hostility toward religion masked the religious and millenarian aspects of his own thinking, yet behind Marx’s political theories stands a distinctly eschatological reading of history. The Shining Path insurgency in Peru represented a coherent development of Peruvian Left political culture and orthodox Marxist concepts of violent struggle in the name of ‘progress’. The senderistas were not an irrational Maoist cult, as they have someti…
