  • Subliminal Perception: The Nature of a Controversy

    Robert Baldwin, N F Dixon et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•1976

  • Preconscious processing in schizophrenics: An exploratory investigation

    Open Access•Susan Henley, S H A HENLEY et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1976

  • Extraction of information from continuously masked successive stimuli: An exploratory study

N F Dixon, Susan Henley et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•1975

Results from this series of brief pilot experiments suggest that, under certain conditions, it is humanly possible to extract information from superimposed continuously masked letter strings presented successively on the VDU of a microprocessor

  • The Attenuation of Visual Persistence

    Open Access•N F Dixon, E J Hammond•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1972

Haber & Standing (1969, 1970) have shown that visual persistence (VP), which it is suggested corresponds to Sperling's ‘Visual Information Store’, can be directly measured. The present investigation extends this approach with another direct measure of VP. This involves recording the number of phenomenally simultaneous lines that are experienced when viewing a single trace moving in a straight line, at a sweep speed above the fusion threshold, acr…

  • A Note on Field Dependency and Movement After‐effects

Open Access•E BAKER, Erin E Baker et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1967

  • Eeg Correlates of Threshold Regulation as a Function of Stimulus Wavelength: A Comparison Between Normal Subjects and Psychiatric Patients

    Open Access•N F Dixon•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1966

Results of a previous study (Dixon & Lear, 1963, 1964) suggested the perceptual defence effect may be attributable to changes in pre‐awareness levels of cortical activation. The present study looks into this apparent relation between threshold and activation by making use of the fact that the direction of threshold change, under conditions of sympathetic activity, appears to depend upon the wavelength of the stimulus test light. The results, usin…

  • Influences of Training and Fatigue on the Continuous Recording of a Visual Differential Threshold

    Open Access•M HAIDER, N F Dixon•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1961

A visual differential threshold was recorded continuously for 14 min. in each of six different sessions. Integrated scores for 1/2‐min. periods, indicative of mean threshold values, showed a marked tendency to rise between the second and the tenth minute of the experiment. This was attributed to a fatigue decrement of a central state of vigilance or alertness. The scoring of length of curve and number of control adjustments during 1/2 min. period…
