Country Roads: Travel, Visibility, and Late Classic Settlement in the Southern Maya Mountains
Mayanist archaeology has long been concerned with creating and evaluating explanatory models for the locations of ancient sites relative to one another and to the physical geography of the Maya world. This study combines epigraphic data and spatial analyses to explore motivations for settlement location and to interrogate territorial strategies in Late Classic (a.d. 600–830) kingdoms in the southern Maya Mountains, around the modern towns of Dolo…
Determining Hominid Handedness in Lithic Debitage: A Review of Current Methodologies
Handedness is inextricably linked to brain lateralization and language in humans, and identifying handedness in the paleo-archaeological record is important for understanding hominid cognitive evolution. This study reports on experiments for identifying knapper handedness in lithic debitage using three previously established methods: , and . A blind study was conducted on lithic debitage (n = 631) from Acheulean handaxes (n = 10) created by right…
Quantitative analysis of Munsell color data from archeological ceramics
The Munsell color system is almost universally used for measuring colors of archeological artifacts. In addition to recording soil colors, many use the Munsell system to record the colors of ceramic attributes, such as pastes, slips, glazes, and paints. These data are often used in both modal and typological analyses of ceramic style. Most often, however, Munsell color data are used in a purely descriptive fashion, and the quantitative potential …
