  • Religion und Populismus

    Open Access•Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•Streit-Kultur•2025

Gefor…

  • Ethics in medicine

    Open Access•Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2023

The article provides an overview of important topics in contemporary medical ethics. Methodologically, it is a literature review. The article addresses only a limited selection of the problematic areas, which are, however, related to each other: digitisation of medicine, genome editing, personalised medicine as well as ethical problems and dilemmas of allocation in healthcare. The global COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as a focus and trigger. Refle…

  • What Kind of Theology Does the Church of the Future Need? Reflections in a European Context

    Open Access•Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•Religions•2023

While Christianity is growing worldwide, especially in various forms of charismatic and Pentecostal churches, membership in the Protestant churches and in the Catholic Church are declining throughout Europe. A theology for the church of the future, particularly a theology for pastoral ministry, needs an understanding of the church that is at once relevant to practical pastoral ministry and congregational work as well as awareness of the processes…

  • Christian Faith in Creation for Environmental Ethics and Climate Protection

    Open Access•Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•Khazanah Theologia•2022

The paper examines the practical consequences of Christian faith in creation for environmental ethics and climate protection. Both are interpreted as a practical form of faith in creation, distinguishing between faith in creation and reflected theology of creation. Methodologically, the article proceeds by interpreting classical statements of the Bible and the Christian tradition in light of modern insights. The article pays special attention to …

  • Vertrauen und Zuversicht in der Coronakrise

    Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•Theologische Rundschau•2021

The corona pandemic is not only an ethical test, it is also a test for dogmatics, which has to give an account for Christian faith in the present. How the Christian faith can convey trust and confidence in the tension between confession andworld experience, even in times of crisis, is considered in this article.

  • The human being and the world as God’s creation

    Open Access•Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2021

All the medical and bioethical questions, ranging from stem cell research to converging technologies and synthetic biology, touch on the question regarding the image of human beings and their position in the cosmos, by which we are able to orient ourselves. This article argues that the biblical belief in creation and the discourse about humans as created beings by and in the image of God can still be proclaimed as a viable form of human self-inte…

  • Reader-response-criticism in the light of the scriptural principle

    Open Access•Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2016

This article discusses the issue of deconstructing and reconstructing the scriptural principle of the Reformation. As will be shown, such a reconstruction in the light of reader-response-criticism requires engagement with the concerns of the classical doctrine of inspiration. It also allows a fresh look at the fact and the hermeneutical problem that there exists a variety of concepts of a Christian canon of the Bible

  • Glaube zwischen Bekenntnis und Welterfahrung

    Open Access•Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•New Testament Studies•2015

Dieter Lührmann (1939–2013), whose last post was as a teaching professor at the University of Marburg, was a highly esteemed New Testament scholar and theologian. In the tradition of Rudolf Bultmann and his teacher Günther Bornkamm he was a proponent of a theological exegesis which combined strict philological and historical work with theological thought. One of the main points of his research was the concept of faith in early Christianity. Accor…

  • Towards an Ecumenical Hermeneutics of Diversity

    Open Access•Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•Theology Today•2012

The article discusses critically the hermeneutical concept of the document “A Treasure in Earthen Vessels” by the World Council of Churches. I argue for a concept of an ecumenical hermeneutics of diversity instead of the former paradigm of unity and consensual ecumenism. An ecumenical hermeneutics, understood as a hermeneutics of difference and diversity, is not the continuation by other means of consensual ecumenical agreement as we have hithert…

  • Exegese, Tod und Leben Zur Hermeneutik des Todes und der Auferstehung biblischer Texte Exegese

    Ulrich H J Körtner•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Theologie und…•2005

Johann Georg Hamann saw the written word of God as the ultimate consequence of his incarnation. The biblical texts as well also carry the death of Christ in their essence as a figure of incarnation. Roland Barthes called the process of putting these texts into writing, by which the text gains autonomy in relation to the author, the »death of the author«. In terms of the theology of the Holy Scriptures, this idea can be connected to the way people…
