  • The Intertidal Zone of the Chiloé Archipelago (Chile)

Open Access•Ricardo Alvarez, Ricardo Zariquiey Alvarez et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026

This study reviews the ontological and worldview dimensions of the island inhabitants of the Chiloé archipelago in southern Chile and their contribution to sustaining the ecosystem relationships that include them, with a special focus on the intertidal zone. These dimensions act by mediating people’s behaviour when implemented as long-standing traditional customs in a practical way (e.g., gathering or fishing), mitigating potential negative impac…

This pilot study explores the use of micromorphology and automated mineral analysis to investigate the archived sedimentary record within a 73 cm long core collected from site GNL Quintero 1 (GNLQ1), a submerged (at −13 m) Late Pleistocene landscape located nearshore in Quintero Bay (32°S), Central Chile. Samples from the transported and untransported core half were analysed, with the former showing some homogenisation of sediments. Core T1 compr…

  • Identifying non-anthropogenic accumulation in zooarchaeological assemblages using naive Bayesian classifier

Open Access•Sebastián Yrarrázaval, Isabel Cartajena et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Advances•2023•References: 45

The taphonomic evaluation of zooarchaeological assemblages is paramount for compelling interpretations of past subsistence strategies, palaeoecological interactions and overall biasing of the anthropogenic bone deposition and modification by non-anthropogenic agents. A recent trend in this field, has focused on bone surface modifications (BSM) to successfully generate reference frameworks for critical evaluation of the interpretive potential of s…

Results of analysis from feathers recovered in the Early Formative (ca. 2700 B.P.) Tulán-122 site are presented. The site is located in Quebrada Tulán on the eastern slope of the Puna de Atacama. Macroscopic features (coloration and size) of taxidermic and zoorachaeological samples were compared. A protocol for the preparation of feather barbules was performed and the nodes were studied by using amplification (1400X). The genus Sicalis (Boie 1828…
