  • Rulers and Subjects

Walter M Pintner, John Gooding•ARTICLE•The Slavic and East European…•1997

This is a study of the governers and the governed of Russia, from 1801 until the liquidation of the Soviet state in 1991. The book places the two revolutions of 1917 and 1989 in the context of 200 years of Russian history. The first in 1917 replaced tzarism and briefly created a government with democratic intensions, but within months it was toppled by the Bolsheviks whose subsequent attempt to build socialism caused untold suffering, and a more …

  • Lenin in Soviet politics, 1985–91

    John Gooding•ARTICLE•Soviet Studies•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 3

IN 1991 THE LENINIST PERIOD of Russian history ended with the suspension and subsequent abolition of the Communist Party and its ejection from power after seven decades in which it had ruled the country without serious challenge.1 It says much, however, for the complexity of Lenin that the overthrow followed changes carried out at his own, as it were, posthumous instigation. The perestroika reformers had rejected beliefs, attitudes and practices …

  • Perestroika as Revolution from within

    John Gooding•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•1992•Cited by: 4

v hen Mikhail Gorbachev warned of a crisis situation in perestroika's early days, he had the air of crying wolf. Now no one can doubt that the Soviet Union is in crisis. The immediate precipitant of the crisis, whose roots go deep, has been the perestroika program itself. Yet until 1985, Western observers generally assumed that only if the regime faced destabilization would it pay the political price of radical reform and that its current problem…

  • The XXVIII congress of the CPSU in perspective

    John Gooding•ARTICLE•Soviet Studies•1991•Cited by: 4

AN ASSESSMENT of the XXVIII Congress of the CPSU can best begin with the XXVII Congress, from which it was divided by little more than four years but by what seems an aeon of political development. That congress too, one has to remind oneself, occurred during the general secretaryship of Mikhail Gorbachev, and it too had a place in the history of perestroika. This, however, was still a high mass of the old communism, its rituals reflecting and su…

  • Toward War and Peace

    John Gooding, John D Gooding•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•1989

As a young writer Tolstoy has two characteristic themes: autobiography and war. These are alternative themes, however, and they rarely overlap. The autobiography is intensely self-regarding and is at its best when, as in Childhood, it seems by the very force of its solipsism to universalize the personal. War presented Tolstoy with the opposite challenge-to personalize the universal. For drawn from deep-felt personal experience though the war writ…
