    Jarle Simensen•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 11

International aid has been a significant element both in economic development and international politics since 1945, but has been insufficiently integrated in the discipline of history. The present article discusses the main problems of method, sources and discourse in the field of aid history, based on the recently published three‐volume history of Norwegian development aid. Jarle Simensen•ARTICLE•Forum for Development Studies•2006•Cited by: 4

Against the background of recent literature and debate about the role of religious NGOs in international aid the article presents a historical survey of the Norwegian experience in the field, from early missionary history to the link-up with the Norwegian Agency for International Development after 1960 and the emergence of independent local churches as partners. The tension between devotion to evangelism and concern for practical work is evident …

  • Value-Orientation in Historical Research and Writing: The Colonial Period in African History

    Open Access•Jarle Simensen•ARTICLE•History in Africa•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 26

The aim of this paper is to use African historiography as an example of how value-orientations influence historical research and writing. This can be seen as a contribution to the never-ending discussion about the problem of objectivity in history. African historiography is particularly well suited for such an analysis. Its birth as a separate area of academic study after World War II was partly the result of internal, professional developments, …

  • Counterfactual Arguments in Historical Analysis: From the Debate on the Partition of Africa and the Effect of Colonial Rule

    Open Access•Jarle Simensen•ARTICLE•History in Africa•1978•References: 9

During the last decade the question of counterfactual arguments has attracted a good deal of attention both in philosophy and history. A recent example, which concentrates on the logics of counterfactual analysis in history, is T.O. Climo and P.G.A. Howells' “Possible worlds in historical explanation.” Further progress in this field probably depends both on a development of the purely logical issues involved and an analysis of the actual usage of…
