The Date of the Medieval Coin-Hoard from Tom a'Bhuraich in Aberdeenshire
The Morley St Peter Hoard
The significance of the find lies both in its size and in its spanning of the late 9th and early 10th centuries, a period earlier than that embraced by the very few other Late Saxon hoards from this area. Its importance is further enhanced by the fact that it is believed to have been recovered in its entirety, whereas a majority of hoards of this period are feared to have suffered some dispersal at least before they could be recorded and assessed…
The Early Iron Age Treasure from Snettisham Norfolk
This paper describes and discusses a group of five hoards of metal-work and coins found in 1948–50 by ploughing supplemented by excavation at Ken Hill, Snettisham, in north-west Norfolk. On account of the large quantity of precious metals included the find has been termed collectively ‘The Snettisham Treasure.’ Its principal contents are as follows:—Hoard A (p. 36) contained the remains of four gold tubular torcs. Hoard B contained three staters,…
A Saxon treasure hoard found at Chester, 1950
On 29th November 1950 workmen employed by the Merseyside and North Wales Electricity Board were relaying a cable on the west side of Castle Esplanade, Chester. In cleaning up the western side of the trench with a spade, 18 in. below the present pavement level and 29 ft. to the south of St. Martin's Court, one of the men cut through a small earthenware vessel and a shower of coins and silver bullion poured into the bottom of the trench. It is dist…
The Warships of the Later Roman Empire
It is surprising that so little study should have been devoted to the navy of the later Empire. Since new information has now become available, it would seem a favourable opportunity to consider afresh the structure of the warships of the imperial fleets. The ancient sources may be divided into three main categories. The first is represented by that invaluable collection of tenth century naval handbooks which have recently been edited by M. Dain.…
