Settler Shock
This article draws on an analysis of the consistent phenomenon of "settler shock"-the persistent invocations of surprise expressed by settler Canadians whenever there are reports of historical or ongoing violence against Indigenous Peoples-to articulate the dynamics of colonial fetishism and settler disavowal. It demonstrates how these expressions of shock are not, as they might appear, authentic responses to genuinely unknown events but rather a…
Postmemory Workshops
Currently there’s no institutional space devoted expressly to poetry of the refugee experience. Let’s imagine one into existence together, for a day. —Event Description for the “One-Day Center for Refugee Poetics” (“Upcoming”) In 2018, the Center for Refugee Poetics (CfRP) held its inaugural, one-day, pop-up event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, complete with workshops, readings, walking tours, and exhibitions. Originating from a conversation abou…
The Era of Endless Repatriation
Originally given in the form of two lectures at the Musée du quai Branly, this essay explores the often fraught politica of repatriation in a Canadian context. It suggests that we have moved into an era in which repatriation, understood in this alternate sense as the decentring of settler museum authority and the recognition of Indigenous sovereign rights, is simply unavoidable. This is not just about a "reckoning" with prior histories of colonia…
Dialectics of Music
Combining the philosophy and musicology of T.W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, and Gilles Deleuze, Joseph Weiss makes an original contribution to the field of aesthetics and critical theory. Highlighting previously hidden connections between these philosophers' work brings into focus a new perspective on the dynamic relationship between music, nature, history, and technology. Musical expression in this study is presented as one of the core ways in whic…
Not Built to Last
This article explores the afterlife of a military base on the islands of Haida Gwaii, unceded territory of the Indigenous Haida Nation. Canadian Forces Station Masset was officially decommissioned in 1997, its buildings abandoned by Canada's armed forces. The understanding of both Haida and their settler neighbors was thus that the army was gone, leaving only ruins and ambivalent affects in its wake. Yet the military had not actually left; rather…
Giving Back the “Queen Charlotte Islands”
On June 17, 2010, representatives of the Indigenous Haida Nation held a ceremony to formally return the "Queen Charlotte Islands," a name that had been colonially imposed on Haida Gwaii, their ancestral homeland and sovereign territory since the nineteenth century. This ceremonial return is analyzed as a process through which the Haida Nation can incorporate settler governance into a regime of respectful relations that functions on Haida terms. F…

UN environmental policy
This interdisciplinary article draws from the radical ideas of global political ecology (GPE), environmental politics, ecological economics and the sociological analysis of social movements. It seeks to help bridge the research gap regarding non-state actors' (NSAs) influence on the role of the nation-state and the United Nations in global political ecology and environmental policy, including emission reductions, such as antideforestation measure…
Challenging Reconciliation
This article investigates some of the kinds of social work that the twinned concepts of “truth” and “reconciliation” are currently performing in Canada. Though they are intimately associated with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRCC) and Indian residential schools, it is submitted that it is important to investigate the multiple ways in which truth and reconciliation as concepts are deployed by TRCC supporters, analysts, and cr…

Transforming Mimetic Play
At stake in Adorno's aesthetics in general, and his analysis of musical development in particular, is the manner in which artworks resist the formal, subjective characteristics of the death drive's play. In order to win back control, as it were, of a mastery that has hardened nature's particularity, Adorno conceives of a transformed, critical mimesis. Ultimately the work of the contemporary Finish composer, Kaija Saariaho, is revealed as an exemp…
A new solution for old problems in Brazil
Land clearing has been the traditional tool for creating greater agricultural production since time began. All who consume the products of the land, in whatever form, are part of the sacrifice, willing or not, of biodiversity to generate sustenance and wealth (Declaration of Madrid, 2001).The farmer is omnipresent in areas which produce food and fibre and in many where timber is a product ; he should be encouraged to become a "steward of the land"…
Survivor guilt, submissive behaviour and evolutionary theory
In prior research submissive behaviour has been studied in relation to social comparison. Evolutionary theory conceptualized submissive behaviour as a fear‐based self‐protective strategy when in a subordinate position. In this study we hypothesized that survivor guilt, the type of guilt associated with feeling better off than others, is also linked to submissive behaviour. The Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire, the Submissive Behaviour Inventory,…
Bondage Fantasies and Beating Fantasies
Two male patients had masochistic sexual fantasies: one had bondage fantasies, the other beating fantasies. Each patient had been traumatized in childhood by his experiences with a martyr mother. Each had developed the belief that in an intimate sexual relationship with a woman he would hurt her. As a consequence, each tended to suppress his sexuality. Each used masochistic fantasies to reassure himself that he was not hurting his fantasied or re…

Bernfeld’s “The Facts of Observation in Psychoanalysis”
In his 1941 article, "The Facts of Observation in Psychoanalysis," Siegfried Bernfeld wrote that observing the sequence of events leading up to and following the patient's confessing a secret is important for psychoanalytic theory. The patient's confessing a secret is important for psychoanalytic theory. The patient's confessing a secret may follow a comment by the analyst that clears away the obstacles to the patient's confessing by creating an …
