Anointings with Oil and Handlayings in the Early Eastern Church
Anointings and handlayings were used across the Christian liturgical tradition in the patristic period and often in a number of similar ways. While distinct ritual gestures, their similar use, particularly in the rites of Christian initiation, suggests they were often interchangeable and, thus, functioned as ritual cognates. This article defines what a ritual cognate is within a ritual system. It then looks at the way these gestures were used in …

Confirmation, an Ecclesiological Anamnesis
Two theological models, which John Roberto has labeled the theological-maturity and the liturgical-initiation models, have dominated twentieth- and twenty-first-century interpretations of confirmation. Each is successful in explaining part of confirmation’s complex history and one or more of the various contexts for its practice in the Roman Catholic Church today. In this article, a new look at the theological significance of the early precursors…
"The "Milan Euchologion
Four fragmentary Egyptian papyrus sheets containing liturgical texts housed at the Catholic University of Milan were published by Giuseppe Ghedini in 1933 and subsequently known as the Milan Euchologion. While reportedly lost, a single photograph of the papyri preserved in Harold Idris Bell's papers in the British Library allows for a reassessment of the arrangement and contents of the papyri. Based on a new analysis of the fragments, it is clear…
The use and capacity of early churches in Dakhla Oasis
This article addresses questions pertaining to capacity, access, and the use of space in the context of early Christian places of worship. The available archaeological evidence helps shed light on the development of Christian architecture, in particular the adoption of the basilica type, and the organization of the liturgical space. However, equally important are questions about how many people a church could hold and how the laity and clergy wer…
The Ascent Into Heaven
Edward Kilmartin in his work on liturgical anamnesis sought to develop a Trinitarian theology of liturgical participation that could bridge Christ’s historical deeds with present reality in light of the problem of time. Kilmartin identified two poles in liturgical praying: the anamnetic and the epicletic. Together they unite the faithful with Christ in the Holy Spirit. At the same time, Gabriele Winkler in her study of the classical anaphoras has…
Crisis, Liturgy, and Communal Identity
The Hispano-Mozarabic Rite is a helpful case study for liturgists interested in the construction of community identity across time and in light of various types of crises. From the 6th century to today, a number of internal and external crises-political and ecclesial-have shaped the Rite and have threatened its continued existence. From the Arab invasions in 711 CE, the Rite has been key to the preservation of the Mozarab community, the group of …
A Chrismatic Framework for Understanding the Intersection of Baptism and Ministry in the Roman Catholic and Eastern Churches
The Christian tradition lacks a robust chrismatic theology. This is regrettable, since a more developed theology of chrism can clarify the relationship between the baptismal and the ministerial priesthood. This essay outlines the historical origins of chrism, articulates a theology of chrism as a "Christ-maker," and develops a more comprehensive chrismatic ecclesiology that can contribute to ecumenical dialogue. The last objective occupies the bu…
