  • Centering knowledge production: A matter of historical memory

    Open Access•Bradley A Levinson•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•2023•References: 7

By now, my 2016 Council on Anthropology of Education (CAE) presidential address in Minneapolis has become part of our historical memory. Apparently, it has also become infamous. In the pages of this journal, it was called the “big elephant in the room” by Marta Baltodano in the publication of her 2017 presidential address (Baltodano, 2019, 384). Curiously, it has also been characterized pejoratively as a defense of “objective, descriptive researc…

  • Transnational migration and civic education in Mexico: An evolving story

Bradley A Levinson, María Eugenia Luna Elizarrarás et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Intercultural…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In recent decades, formal programmes for Mexican civic education have slowly shifted from an emphasis on national identity and solidarity through assimilation to a multicultural (if not intercultural) emphasis on forms of democratic membership and participation. Yet such advances in educational policy and curricula are limited and sometimes contradictory: the recognition of ethno-cultural diversity remains focused almost exclusively on the ‘Indig…

  • Inhabited Institutions in New Destinations: Local Sense-Making and Institutional Work in Community Response to New Immigration

    Open Access•Judson G Everitt, Bradley A Levinson•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 19

Comparing two Midwest new destination communities, we identify key ways that local residents actively make sense of, and enact, community response for Latino immigrant newcomers. Our findings show that, over time, local actors privilege preexisting institutional ideals in ways that justify waning support for ongoing newcomer needs. We conclude with discussion of how empirical work in the "inhabited institutions" framework can help specify the sen…

    Open Access•Bradley A Levinson, Bradley A U Levinson et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Policy•2009•Cited by: 132•References: 30

This article outlines some theoretical and methodological parameters of a critical practice approach to policy. The article discusses the origins of this approach, how it can be uniquely adapted to educational analysis, and why it matters-not only for scholarly interpretation but also for the democratization of policy processes as well. Key to the exposition is the concept of appropriation as a form of creative interpretive practice necessarily e…

  • Educación para una Ciudadanía Democrática en los Países de América Latina: Una Mirada Crítica

    Open Access•Bradley A Levinson, Juan G Berumen•ARTICLE•REICE Revista Iberoamericana…•2007•References: 2

  • Secondary Schools and Communities of Practice for Democratic Civic Education: Challenges of Authority and Authenticity

This article reviews and critiques the concept of "community of practice" (CoP), and analyzes its relevance for democratic citizenship education in secondary social studies. The authors discuss the origins of the CoP concept in the work of Lave and Wenger (1991), trace its usage in recent educational scholarship, and outline its conceptual contributions. The authors call for the adoption of the CoP concept ("mutual engagement, joint enterprise, a…

  • Linking State and Society in Discourse and Action: Political and Cultural Studies of the Cárdenas Era in Mexico

    Open Access•Daniela Spenser, Bradley A Levinson•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•1999

On 6 July 1997, Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, founder and leader of the Mexican Partido de la Revolucion Democraitica (PRD), scored an impressive victory in being elected mayor of Mexico City. Cardenas's new status as leader of the world's largest city, along with the PRD's substantial gains in parliamentary elections, has raised important questions about the sources of their combined political strength. To what is owed the victory of Cuauhtemoc Cardenas …

  • Resituating the Place of Educational Discourse in Anthropology

    Open Access•Bradley A Levinson•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1999•Cited by: 18•References: 50

This critical essay examines the place of educational discourse in contemporary anthropology. I address the growing influence of "cultural studies" frameworks in anthropology-especially in research on popular culture, media, and identity-and the corresponding neglect of specifically educational discourses and practices, in and out of schools. To illustrate, I briefly examine recent research by four noted cultural anthropologists who mention the e…

Ogbu's work is situated in relation to the “cultural difference” approach in the American anthropology of education. Basic concepts are introduced and important theoretical contributions are noted. Conceptual problems then are identified in Ogbu's approach, and his shortcomings …

The author attempts to work through the epistemological, methodological, and ethical questions involved when a man attempts to contribute to feminist theory and practice with ethnographic knowledge. He discusses the precursors to such a project by recounting the history of male contributions to feminist anthropological scholarship and reviewing current debates about the problems of interpretation and praxis in feminist ethnography. Drawing on fie…

  • Student Culture and the Contradictions of Equality at a Mexican Secondary School

    Open Access•Bradley A Levinson•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•1998•Cited by: 5•References: 17

This article examines the dynamic relationship between official school structures and forms of student subjectivity through an ethnographic account of student culture at a Mexican secondary school. Tightly interwoven discursive and organizational practices promoting solidarity and equality defined the "official" school structure. Students appropriated these resources to fashion a culture of equality which both accommodated and denied different st…

    Open Access•Bradley A Levinson•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 8

This article describes the different forms of students' moral discourse at a Mexican secondary school, paying special attention to their judgments about teachers' arbitrary use of authority, pedagogical formality, and favoritism. The article then analyzes the historical and cultural roots of this discourse. Taking issue with situationist and organizational explanations of pupil resistance, the author argues that to fully understand student's mora…
