We Have Another Technical Issue: How Can VR be Used to Study the Affective Footing of Urban Encounters
This article explores the methodological potential and technical challenges of using scripted 360° videos, viewed with a virtual reality (VR) headset for immersive experience, in research on urban everyday life. More specifically, it contributes to ongoing debates about the role of affect in urban encounters and everyday coexistence. Bridging ethnography and experimental psychology through the use of VR, the article reflects on lessons learned fr…
Becoming-with in animal leisure: Working dog search training as human and nonhuman intra-actions
This article provides an ethnographically detailed moment-to-moment analysis of leisure as a ‘multispecies practice’ in working dog search training sessions. The data come from 30 hours of video recordings of two Finnish amateur groups engaged in working dog search training. Drawing on the existing literature on leisure with and for dogs as well as on new materialist thinking, the article contributes to the field of leisure studies both methodolo…
Ole hyvä (‘please’) + imperative: A multimodal analysis of Finnish police directive turns
In this article we conduct a multimodal conversation analysis of the use of OH directive constructions where police officers instruct citizens to step into a police van as the final phase of an apprehension. To perform the task, officers typically formulate a directive turn that uses an imperative clause (IMP), but in the examples analysed in this article, it is combined with ole hyvä (OH) — ‘please’. In the case of these OH directive constructio…
Maps, mobility, and perspective: Remarks on Map Use in Producing an Orienteering Course
Orienteering presents a perspicuous setting for exploring the intersubjective and mobile methods of map use and wayfaring. We introduce an ethnomethodological and conversation analytic treatment of orienteering, with a focus on how natural features, a tree and boulder, are mapped and found. In doing so, we comment on the nature of map use and mobility, how ‘route logics’ and categorial perspectives develop, and how certainty and uncertainty are d…

Response Cries Inviting an Alignment: Finnish huh huh
This study looks at the use of the Finnish response cry huh huh as a device to invite an alignment and to assess joint physical experience. Response cries establish a speaker’s orientation to the world, but they also give cues for the recipient on how to respond to the responsive actions appropriately. While the meaning of huh huh is unproblematic for the recipients, both speakers and recipients orient to the vagueness of huh huh through their tu…
Too good to be a sport? Why dog agility struggles in gaining recognition as a sport
Over the last two decades, the Finnish community of dog agility practitioners has worked diligently towards gaining recognition for agility as a sport. The process reached an important milestone in 2016 when the National Sports Council listed the Finnish Agility Association as eligible for financial support from the state. As one of the pioneer countries in this regard, Finland is of great interest, as the agility sport continues to become more p…

Choreographing the Performer-Audience Interaction
The article introduces the concept of choreography, defined as situationally enacted participation and action framework that provides sequential structure for social interaction, for studying performer-audience interaction during musical performances. Performers develop a preferred type of interaction during a repeated series of concerts. Audiences become absorbed in the choreography through participation in the concerts and the circulation of th…
Choreographies of Resistance: Mobile Bodies and Relational Politics
Choreographies of Resistance examines bodies and their capacity for obstructive and resistant action in places and spaces where we do not expect to see it. Drawing on empirical research that considers cases on asylum seekers, beggars, undocumented migrants and migrant nurses, the book attests to the scope and diversity of corporeal resistance in the realm of politics. It is shown that bodies that are not assumed to have political agency can obstr…
Events of the Body Politic: A Nancian Reading of Asylum-seekers' Bodily Choreographies and Resistance
This article thinks the place of the body, agency and movement in politics through the body of the asylum-seeker. Asylum-seekers do not have ample space to politically voice their experiences, but their bodies and ways of taking agency are fluid. The Agambenian idea of exceptional space and bare life privileges the power of the sovereign, leaving little space for agency for its subjects. It leads to an impasse, as it offers no viable option of th…
Corporeal Choreographies between Politics and the Political: Failed Asylum Seekers Moving from Body Politics to Bodyspaces
Corporeal choreography can capture the kind of political agency needed for a transformative politics to emerge. Interviews with failed asylum seekers exemplify negotiations and articulations of agency through movements in a bodyspace we call the interzone. In the explorations of the ways and implications of failed asylum seekers moving between body politics and the political bodyspace Jean-Luc Nancy's ideas of the ontological body, politics and t…
Resuscitating a Discipline: An Agenda for Critical Peace Research
In this article we write a narrative of the emergence and decline of Peace Research (PR), reflecting especially on its relationship to neighbouring disciplines. In writing this narrative we play critically with medical metaphors, which are often used in PR. We begin with an analysis of the development of PR as it has been practised in the two main journals, Journal of Conflict Resolution and Journal of Peace Research, and show how the initial cri…
